2 Faces of British Football
May 18th 2008 15:25
This week saw the 2 faces of British Football - firstly the fans of Rangers descended in their tens of thousands for the UEFA cup final in Manchester.
It was a carnival atmosphere, fantastic.
Not so fantastic after the game. Rangers lost 2-0, and some drunk fans went on the rampage, and on the news we saw groups of fans surrounding helpless policemen like lions round an antelope.
The policeman said he was lucky to get out alive, and you could see from the footage that he was in grave danger of being kicked to death.
That was a shocking relapse back to the bad days of football violence in Britain, and it's contrasted again by Saturday's FA Cup final between Portsmouth and Cardiff, which had genuine fans supporting their clubs.
