When Calvin Dickinson was whistled for being too rough during a youth hockey game this weekend in Maitland, he headed toward the penalty box.
So did an assistant coach from the opposing team, identified by Maitland police as the father of the teenager with whom Calvin had just scuffled.
Ronald K. Synan Jr., 50, crossed the rink and reached the penalty box. And once inside, he pushed the boy into a corner, according to an arrest affidavit.
Then, according to the report, the south Seminole County man made threats against the boy, called him a foul name and punched him.
Police said the boy defended himself from the attack before bystanders pulled them apart.
Synan, who faces a charge of battery in the incident Saturday at the RDV Sportsplex, said he over-reacted to seeing his 15-year-old son hit and pushed by Calvin, who he described as being about 30 pounds heavier and four inches taller than his son.
"I lost my cool," he said.

You know, I grew up playing youth sports, albeit mostly baseball and I’ve seen an incident or two here and there. When I was about nine, my coach arrived at our game so drunk that he got into a little war of words with the opposing moronic coach and proceeded to charge across the field toward that opposing coach with bat in hand. I remember my ole man jumping over the fence and tackling my coach so he wouldn’t do anything crazy as all of us 8 and 9 year old kids stood petrified at our positions, trying not to piss our pants. I was standing out at shortstop mumbling under my breath, “take me to my happy place… take me to my happy place.”
That said, what the hell is it with these moronic hockey Dad’s? They take the goddamn top prize, every time.
Ronald, your kid is playing the sport of hockey. If you don’t want him getting hit, engaging in a scuffle from time to time, or even being on the receiving end of the occasional cheap shot, you should of told him you weren’t buying his equipment and encouraged him to join the effin chess team. OK?
You went after and punched a 15 year old, Ronald. Good work. Splendid. Oh yes, that’s right, you “lost your cool.”
What an extreme toolbox you are, Ronald Synan. I’m tired of you morons. We don’t go on the ice at a youth hockey game and hit kids. Never. Comprende?
Here’s what I want you to do, Synan. I want you to call BP and see if they can use your pathetic, sorry ass to help plug the gusher. That is your penance. You vs. the gusher. They say it could leak for 24 more years? Maybe with you down there we can cut that to 20 years, tough balls.
