Belichick Delivers In The Clutch Once Again With Seymour Deal
September 7th 2009 15:16
The same people who are currently complaining on sports radio shows right now about this Richard Seymour trade with the Oakland Raiders, are the same people who would've been blowing smoke out of their collective asses complaining if Belichick and the Patriots let him walk away as a free agent for NOTHING after the season ends this year. You simply can't have it both ways people, nor can you always have it all.
If I am an Oakland Raider fan right now, I want to run over to Al Davis' residence with my portable heater and favorite box of smelling salts and attempt to wake this man the hell up. Now, I am of the opinion that the Raiders aren't going to be quite as bad as everyone else seems to think they will be over the next couple of years. I honestly think they are a young team on the rise, albeit a slow rise, but nonetheless they are getting better, so if that pick isn't Top 10-12 in 2011, I won't be shocked. That being said, trading your 2011 first round draft pick away for Richard Seymour, as you attempt to finalize your rebuilding over the next couple of years via the draft is flat out foolish. Seymour was a hell of a football player in New England, but is clearly stepping up to the tee box to begin the back nine of his career. Is he worthy of a number one pick at this stage of the game? He is also a free agent at the end of this season and at the very least if you are Oakland, you had to complete a 'sign and trade' type of deal with the Patriots before consumating this deal. Now Oakland is playing with fire, hoping they can get Seymour to re-sign in Raider Country. In my eyes, even it they do make the Pats sign him first then consumate this trade, I still don't like it for Oakland.
Bottom line, as I mentioned during the TCFB NFL Preview Show a couple of weeks back, Vince Wilfork is the guy you want to keep and build around at this point. Wilfork and Seymour were both free agents at the end of this year and your chances of keeping both of them were slim to none. This is the exact reason that Jarvis Green was signed to a pretty lucrative deal as a backup defensive end a few years ago by New England. Belichick was preparing for this day to come. Seymour nor Wilfork were going to take the 'home town discount.' Now it's time for Green and impressive rookie defensive lineman from Boston College, Ron Brace, to take over. How many times have we watched teams in Boston just let guys walk without getting a damn thing for them in return when they become free agents? Good job Coach, you slapped around Al Davis and company again, this time taking their number one pick. Good deal, the Pats have three number one picks over the next two NFL Drafts. Oh, the possibilities! Darth Vader (aka Billy B.) comes through again in the clutch. What are you doing next month Coach? The Sox could sure use someone as clutch as you in the middle of that lineup when playoff baseball begins in Beantown.
