Celtics Need To Be Very Careful With Kevin Garnett & The Big Three
January 15th 2010 16:30
Whenever I’m online and on one of these Celtics fan sites or reading a Celtics notes column in a newspaper, all I see his ‘when will KG be back?’ or somebody counting down the days until his return.
My response: What's the rush!? I want Doc, Danny Ainge & co. to take their time with KG. This team needs to be as healthy as can be come playoff time. The same goes for Ray Allen and Paul Pierce.
This Celtics team is plenty good enough to win the majority of their games while any one of the ‘Big Three’ is out of action. Whether that player is Pierce, Garnett or Allen who happen to be out, it’s all good. I would much prefer going into the postseason, with a healthy, rested Big Three as a 5th seed, opposed to going in as a banged up, tired Big Three as a 2 or 3 seed. This team---when healthy---is as good as any team in the NBA and can win any playoff series from any seeded position. My biggest fear is rushing Garnett back into action and this injury just becoming worse and worse.
Doc Rivers is in for his toughest challenge of knowing when to step on the gas and when to ease off the pedal moving forward. These guys---in terms of basketball age---are old. All three of these guys, especially Garnett, have a great amount of mileage on their bodies. This championship window with these three guys at the core is starting to close and minutes must be managed now more than ever. Ripping off a 5-10 game win streak in January or February while showcasing the Big Three---at the expense of their health--- flat out just doesn’t mean as much as being as close to 100% health wise when playoff time comes calling.
