Could There Be A Johnny Jesus Resurrection At Fenway?
August 24th 2010 13:30
Check out what Jason Varitek had to say about Johnny Damon and the possibility of a Johnny Jesus resurrection at Fenway, in todays Globe article by Nick Cafardo ..
“He’s a special player,’’ said Sox catcher Jason Varitek, an ex-Damon teammate. “He’s pushing Hall of Fame-type numbers. And you add that Johnny’s great in the clubhouse, he’s a gamer on the field, and one hell of a teammate.’’
“It would be a nice opportunity,’’ Varitek added. “But we’ll let him do what he needs to do. Johnny, aside from being a great player, he makes athletic adjustments offensively. He plays hurt, he doesn’t always play at 100 percent. So much of it is how he plays the game. He plays the game right. It pushes the energy.
“He’s definitely an exciting player.’’

Let me state clearly, I am 100% a Johnny Damon guy. Love the guy. He epitomizes what a ballplayer is all about at the major league level & as a huge Red Sox fan, I'd welcome him back in a heartbeat.
I thought the guy should've been brought back as a free agent before the season to play left field here for a couple of years. The Red Sox thought otherwise and decided to sign Mike Cameron and move Ribs Ellsbury to left.
I always laugh at the people that hated Damon when he left here for New York. People.....he got his doors blown off the effin hinges by the Yankees with a contract that nobody else was even coming close to offering. Every last one of you would've done the same thing.
That said, I'm not really clear what the Red Sox are hoping to achieve with this claim of Damon. I am confused. This team did ZERO at the trade deadline to improve this ball club, yet now they want to bring Johnny Jesus back into the fold to help them with the nearly impossible task of making the playoffs at this stage of the game?
Doesn't add up.
This is purely a "let's create a buzz" move on behalf of the team brass. A "sell some merchandise/create a buzz" move to be exact. Anything that comes out of it is icing on the cake, say, if they actually did overtake the Rays or Yankees and get into the "tournament" as my favorite ex-football coach used to say.
All the "Damon Haters" would be plugging their collective pie holes with Fenway Franks and cheering their asses off for him.
Am I confused by the claim?
Yes.
But I love it.

Hmm. I'm thinking it's to block the teams behind them in the waiver order from claiming him. You think?
