Darrelle Revis Of Jets In Class Of His Own When It Comes To Cornerback
January 4th 2010 19:00
I love watching this kid Darrelle Revis play corner for the J-E-T-S. He’s one hell of a player. Physical, yet he will cover you like a blanket as well. Ask Mr. Moss. Oh wait, Randy denied Revis had single coverage on him and had all sorts of help over the top. That was the reason Randy got shut down in that first Jets game. We were all wrong, right Randy? Spare me. Sorry Pats/Randy fans---I’m one of you---but I call it like I see it and what I saw that day wasn’t much help ‘over the top.’ Randy just got beat and was crying about it per usual when things don't go his way.
I was reading a piece on him yesterday in the Boston Globe by Bert Breer and former Pats cornerback, Ty Law, was saying how he loves Revis’ game and that he reminds him of himself in his prime. Apparently Law has been a mentor of sorts to Revis and they both hail from Aliquippa, PA. I agree, not only do they wear the same number (24) and carry themselves with the same sort of swagger on the field, but they are very similar style players. In the brief time that I’ve seen Revis play I’d have to say that I think he is a little bit better of a pure ‘cover corner’ than Law. I think Law was a little more physical at the line of scrimmage but it’s close.
Well today, Revis was Peter King’s choice for Defensive Player of the Year in his Monday Morning Quarterback piece . There was a hell of a stat on Revis in that piece as well. In 2009, Revis has lined up in single coverage (majority of time) against, Randy Moss, Andre Johnson, Steve Smith, Reggie Wayne, Marques Colston, T.O., Roddy White & Chad Ochocinco in this 2009 season. None of them had more than 35 receiving yards against him. That is an incredible stat considering the skill level of those wideouts he did it against.
Rex Ryan has a nasty, tough, skilled defense in New York and this kid is the cornerstone of it all. Hopefully Ochodinko (just kidding, I love you Ocho!) gets himself healthy for Saturday and his matchup with Revis. This will be fun to watch.
