Does The Away Goal Rule Ruin Football?
April 30th 2008 12:48
The away goal rule - this is always one for debate.
It was brought in to liven up the game, because it was felt that in European matches, the away side was always too defensive, and then they'd use the home leg to do the attacking.
The away goal rule means that if you score at the away leg, and the aggregate score afte both legs is tied, the away goal counts as two.
This means that teams playing away from home have a much higher incentive to attack, as the away goal can prove crucial.
It can have the advanatge of making games tense right up to the final whistle, but it has 2 clear downsides.
The first is that teams are now more inclined to defend at the home game instead of the away game!
The second drawback, and this is the one I have trouble with, is that it makes a fundamental change to the scoring system of the worlds true global game.
Scoring in football is simple, whoever scores more goals wins - it's the simplicity of the game which saw it grow in popularity around the world.
To artificially attach more value to some goals rather than others skews the game without doubt in my opinion.
All in all, if the choice were down to me, I'd do away with the away goal!
