Favre Delivers In Green Bay Homecoming

November 2nd 2009 14:08
Brett Favre,Minnesota Vikings,NFL

Say what you want about Brett Lorenzo Favre, he deserves some props today for a great performance yesterday in Green Bay against his former team. He played great football, under some hostile circumstances that many athletes would've melted under.

Hey, I've said it before and I'll say it again, I haven't always agreed with the way Favre handles everything when it comes to his indecisiveness and the dramatics that come with it all. I do however believe that a lot of the dramatics that come with it all are perpetuated by the media following his every move and with the position he plays. Let us not forget that Junior Seau does the same thing every year as well, yet nobody from ESPN is camping out at his house waiting for 'decision time.' Every year I have to hear that Junior wants to be with his family and spend his free time surfing in sunny San Diego, yet he's back at linebacker once again, years after his 'graduation' from the NFL. Quarterback is a position of glamor in the NFL, linebacker isn't, I understand that fact, but it doesn't change the act of the person. Regardless of position, they do the same thing and Seau escapes criticism because nobody really cares. At the end of the day though, why do we care so much?

I'm retiring. No, wait, I'm not retiring. Yeah, I'm retiring, I'm sure. No, wait, I still want to play. It's gone on forever. A lot of the time it goes on due to the fact that the athlete needs the money. Evander Holyfield anyone? It happens in all sports. In the case of Favre, I truly believe he continues to come back for the love of the game. Yes, maybe he does want to shove it up the collective rear ends of the Green Bay Packer organization as well. Hell, maybe he likes some of the drama of it all as well. So what? Everybody always says, 'wow, can you believe what this chooch Favre has done to this Packer organization and the great fans of Green Bay?' Yet people seem to forget, after the 2007-08 season, it was clear that the Packers were leaning heavily toward Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback, even if they didn't come out and say it publicly. Personally, I'm fine with that decision by Green Bay. They chose the up and coming, young QB in Rodgers before losing him. Favre knew this also and was well aware that the Packers valued Rodgers and didn't want to risk losing him by committing themselves to Favre any longer. So he 'retired.' He never wanted to retire. He just didn't want to be potentially embarassed by the team that he grew up with in the NFL and also the team that he had led to a Super Bowl victory against the Patriots, by being benched or reduced to becoming a backup for Rodgers. He didn't think he was done performing at a high level and wanted to keep playing but realized the legend of #4 was fading in Green Bay from an organizational perspective.

Did Favre handle everything perfectly by forcing the Packers hand by asking for his release amongst some other things? No. Say what you want though, Favre shoots from the hip and tells it like he sees it. He is driven by his emotions and he is one hell of a competitor. Yes, he'll drive you crazy sometimes with his decision making on the field and his indecisiveness off the field. However, he is one hell of a 'take my chances', gun-slinging, exciting competitor who wants to win with the best of 'em and honestly loves playing the game of football. That love of the game comes across clearly while watching the guy play. Yesterday he and his team did just that---they won---and he's never had a player with the talent of Adrian Peterson in his backfield to complement him. He also has a budding star at wideout in Percy Harvin. New Orleans and Minnesota are on a collision course to the NFC championship game and I hope we get to see it. That being said, I'll guarantee you Favre retires after this season..... Wait a minute, on second thought....
