Feeling Fortunate And Thankful As The Best Time Of Year Kicks Off
September 14th 2009 13:49
It's just a different feeling isn't it? A crisp, brisk, autumn breeze as you step out to your deck with your cup of coffee and the sports section (yes, I still like reading the actual newspaper on Sundays with my coffee as antiquated as that may sound. Going out to your deck with your coffee and blackberry or laptop just doesn't cut it for me!). It can only mean one thing---football season has arrived. The four month soap opera has arrived and if your team of choice is lucky, hopefully it stretches into a 5 month soap opera and your team is playing in the first week of February in the Super Bowl.
I've always loved this time of year. Maybe it's because I was born during the 1975 World Series in October so I'm 'pre-programmed' to love it or maybe it's just because this is the best time of year to be a New Englander in my opinion---period---regardless of what month you were born. The autumn leaves, although not quite here yet, will be arriving very shortly as well as having the need of having to throw on a track jacket or your favorite pullover or windbreaker because the temp has dropped a little, and you'll step outside with your paper and coffee and be getting ready for some football on Sundays. Then the baseball playoffs kick into gear and you have some great playoff hardball and NFL Football on the same day. That is what it's all about!
As this years great football season was about to begin this past weekend, my mind was taken in a different direction. Yes, I had my coffee and read my sports section on the deck in the early morning and was getting pumped up for the opening of the Pats season etc.. However, my mind was taken to a different place as I sat there. I felt so very fortunate and thankful. On the heels of the 9/11 anniversary this past week, I started thinking about all the young men and women who would love to be out on their own decks or their parents decks in New England, enjoying a morning cup of joe and checking the sports section, wondering where they were going to be watching the Pats game or other NFL games on this opening weekend. Yes, these young men and women should've been fully aware of the risks you take when you join the armed services, but that being said, they should be home by now instead of being over there fighting what seems to be a never ending war that has gone on for way too long at this point, in my opinion. None of us will ever forget where we were on that fateful day of 9/11/01. I spoke about it last week with various people who are very close to me in my life. We can easily be distracted by the every day grind of life and start to forget the many great things in life that we take for granted.
God Bless all of the young men and women of our armed services. The autumn leaves, hot coffee, your Patriots and Red Sox ---or your teams of choice--- and comforts of home await all of you when you get back. Be safe, and thank you.
Chuck

A Mile High salute to our Men and Women overseas. God Bless and hopefully you got to see theVERY end of the game in Cincy.
Better lucky than good and no points for style in the NFL.

2)Thanks Murray, I was trying to show my sensitive side with this post!! lol
3)haha.. 'tuck rule' What the hell is that? We don't recognize that terminology in NE. it's like it never happened. sort of like how all Raider fans forget that they robbed us back in the '70's with that BS call in playoffs.
