Halladay To Beantown---Hell Yeah!
July 7th 2009 22:11
I smell something funny up in Toronto when fellow Beantowner (well, not quite Beantowner but close enough, he’s from Worcester) Blue Jays G.M. J.P. Ricciardi says this about Roy ‘Doc’ Halladay, "If someone wants Roy and they're willing to blow us away, we'd be willing to listen, that's all I'm saying. That doesn't mean we'd trade him, that doesn't mean we're looking to trade him. All it means is we'd be willing to listen."
Here’s what that really means…. Either Halladay has formally told Ricciardi or Ricciardi just realizes that when Doc is a free agent after the 2010 season that he won’t be re-signing in Toronto, or Interim CEO Paul Beeston has told him to start finding dance partners for Doc’s services pronto so they get something in return ‘in case’ Doc doesn’t re-sign in Toronto. Pardon my excitement but that is some prime 1980’s MJ moonwalk music to my ears when I hear Doc is on the block. I am taking off my ‘writers’ hat and putting on my Red Sox ‘fan’ hat today and asking Theo Epstein, also a fellow Beantowner (well, not quite but close enough, he’s from Brookline) to please bring Harry Leroy Halladay III to Boston. Yes that is Doc’s real name… Can kind of see why he leaned toward using Roy now huh? Offer the Jays Clay Buchholz and Michael Bowden if that’s what it takes. If you can get him and only give up one of them and say big first base prospect, Larz Anderson, even better. There are no guarantees with pitching prospects. None. If they both turn out to be studs, then good luck to Toronto, they’d probably only have the money to keep one anyway when free agency hits. Many apologies to Buchholz’ very lovely fiancé, Lindsay Clubine, aka Deal or No Deal Girl #26 if moving to Toronto wasn’t on the wish list but Roger Clemens told me it’s beautiful there and this is a no brainer to me if you’re Theo. If you can be assured that Doc will re-sign here in Boston for 3 or 4 more years, you pull the trigger. You will have Beckett, Halladay and Lester as your top 3 in the rotation. Who the hell is coming close to that? Never mind a short postseason series in October---if the Sox throw that trio out there---who beats them? You would have the rest of ’09 and ’10 with all three under contract.
Doc Halladay is the man in my eyes. I have loved watching him pitch against the Sox for all these years. He is 141-67 lifetime with a 3.46 ERA and 43 Complete Games. He’s a 6x All-Star and a Cy Young Winner. What’s missing from that resume, you ask? Postseason play---that’s what’s missing. Halladay has never made the playoffs with Toronto and most likely that won’t be changing any time soon. They are in a division with two big spending powerhouses with Boston and New York. Yes, I know, the Rays made it to the postseason last year, but that won’t keep happening year in and year out. That is the exception rather than the rule. Halladay is dying to get to the postseason after accomplishing many personal accolades over his years up with our neighbors of the North.
Some of you might say, listen to this Beantown moron and his greedy attitude---like Boston isn’t good enough already! I don’t care! It’s not my money and we have the prospects to dangle for a stud like Halladay due to Theo’s superb turnaround of this once barren farm system that he was given when he took over. Plus we can’t let those putz’ from NY get their hands on him. Keep riding with Joba, Little Wang, Pettitte and AJ ‘Josh Beckett taught me everything I know’ Burnett.
