It all started last night with a harmless little Tweet on Twitter by yours truly that went a little something like this during that Sox game… “We(the Red Sox) are Tampa’s bi*ches, they are just a bad matchup for the Sox!” Then out of the blue I got ‘jumped’ by 3 or 4 Tampa fans who aren’t on my followers list nor am I following them, telling me to forget the bad matchup stuff, and that they are just better than the Sox amongst other very brave commentary. Now, please keep in mind, I only thought there were about 5 true Tampa Rays fans in the world, so to be attacked by 3 or 4 of the 5 was pretty cool if you ask me. I was loving it. I was eating it up. So we sparred for about 20 minutes and it wasn’t until I told them that they all reminded me of 2001 Pink Hat New England Patriots fans who jumped on the bandwagon after years of misery and not giving a rat’s ass about their team until they got a taste of victory, that it cooled down some. They found that comment funny, they couldn't help themselves. That comment actually won me about 4 or 5 followers from Tampa. Cool stuff.. I’m honored. Truthfully, the only Tampa fans that I thought existed outside of that, were 85-90 year old Red Sox fans originally from Boston but now living in Tampa who occasionally gave the home town team a cheer because they felt bad for any pro athlete to have to put on the ‘Devil Ray’ uniform. Wait, I forgot they changed their name to the ‘Rays’ now, a much more masculine representation of the team. I kept pushing that button last night as well with my new southern friends. One guy actually said to me, “dude, stop with the Devil Ray comments, are you even aware they changed their name?” Yeah pal, I’m aware, I probably know more about your teams history than you do. Do me a favor, go win a World Series and develop a little history in Tampa with your ‘Rays’ before you talk so much smack. I even had Yankee fans that I talk to ask last night, “TB has actual fans?” and “Tampa Ray fans haven’t been around long enough to be granted the right to talk sh*t!”
Let’s get serious here for a minute.. I did have a lot of fun with those guys last night (seriously it was fun meeting you all) and I thanked them for the back and forth banter at the end before I shut down and cleaned up my abrasions from my cyber-jumping in a dark Twitter alley. Can you believe someone from Tampa actually called me a Northern Punk and told me to go eat some chowder? First off, it’s chowwdaaaah putz and second off I already had my chowwdaaaah for lunch, you tool. It was all in good fun, but here’s the reality…I love that team in Tampa. I’ve talked about them being a great young ballclub with tons of young talent and pitching for over a year now to anybody that knows me. I announced my budding ‘bro-mance’ with Evan Longoria way back in April .. click here. Outside of my ‘bro-mance’ with Derek Jeter, Longoria is next in line! Haha..I love the way that kid plays the game. All around, I don’t know of too many players I’d want to start a team with right now outside of Longoria. I think he’s that good. I love Garza as a competitor on the mound and think he is an extremely talented pitcher to go along with David Price for years to come in TB. Hell of a young ballclub.
Anyway, let me go change my bandages and get to work. I still can’t believe there are real Tampa fans out there. Cool. Maybe someday when you develop the hallowed history that the Yankees and Red Sox possess we can actually have a rivalry. I mean in the early 1900’s we were pumping out titles in Boston and we felt so bad for New York, we gave them Babe Ruth so they could win a few? How’d that work out for the Yankees? Pretty well huh? Who knows, maybe one day we’ll feel bad for you too and carelessly give you one of our best players. See, we’re not Northern punks, we’re generous caring people up here.
