"Help me Ronnie???"

I was watching bits and pieces of these of these great NBA playoff games over the weekend and I started thinking about what would be some nice additions for the Celtics in the offseason. I saw a list of free agents online and one name and stat line caught my eye. What would you say if the Celtics were able to get a player with the stat line listed below, all for the price of the mid-level exception? (mid-level exception is a contract that an NBA team can sign a player to for whatever the “average salary” happens to be in the NBA at the time… also any team can sign someone for the mid-level even if it puts them over the salary cap for that season) Here’s the stat line for this guy's career….
**He has averaged 16 or more points per game in 8 of his 12 seasons.
**He averages over 2 steals per game over the course of his career along with over 5 rebounds per game.
**He is a former NBA Defensive Player of the Year.
**He said last year that he didn't mind coming off the bench for Houston, a team that isn't as good as a healthy Boston team.
A lot of you might say, hey, if you can get him for the mid-level it sounds like a great deal.. But what if I told you it was this guy……..
Now, as most of us know, Ron Artest has a couple of screws that need tightening in the ole cranium or maybe the screws are just stripped at this point and can’t be fully tightened but consider this--he is a defensive animal who is an extreme pain in the you know what for whomever he happens to be covering. Remember how he’d get into Paul Pierce’s head constantly when Artest played for Indiana? But he's also an effective offensive player. Yes, Artest was at the center of that Detroit/Indiana melee years ago when the fans were rushing down to the court and Artest did assault a fan but at the same time the fans were charging the court. Yes, and this is the most funny of all, he applied for a job at Circuit City when he was a rookie with the Chicago Bulls, just so he could get the “employee discount.” I know… I know..
But Artest has been more under control as of late. He wasn’t a problem in Houston this year other than the occasional little flare up and he seems to be at the point in his career where he just wants that ring. Now, if you’ve lived in New England or even followed New England Patriots football over the past 7 years, you’ve seen them have success with taking on different malcontents in similar stages of their careers as Artest. Corey Dillon and Randy Moss were widely considered malcontents but came over to New England and played for a winner and changed their behavior. Is part of that playing for a winner? Absolutely it is, but Garnett, Pierce and Allen all have the ring and have never been trouble off of the court. They could keep this guy under control and quite honestly I don’t think they’d really have to at this point. He could be a great guy off the bench for this Celtics team next year. If they sign Big Baby Davis and can get Artest for the mid-level, do you think they’d consider it?
