Remember Al ‘The Planet’ Iafrate?
Big Al came to town during the 1993-94 Bruins season and provided an instant spark of offense as a Defenseman on a Bruins team that had some high hopes. In 12 regular season games prior to the playoff run, Iafrate had 13 points.
Iafrate and the B’s took down the Canadiens in the first round of the playoffs and then lost to the Devils in the conference semi-finals. It was a brief stay in Beantown for ‘The Planet.’
The B’s traded away Joe Juneau---who racked up 102 points the season before as a rookie---for Iafrate.
Iafrate could blast the puck from the point like no other. His record 105.2 mph slap shot in the NHL Skills Competition stood up for 16 years. Who broke that record you ask? Bruins current defenseman, Zdeno Chara in ’09.
Personal story on ‘The Planet’ being acquired by the Bruins: I was in high school at the time and after my baseball games I’d head down to the local park and help out my father with his Little League team. Some of the best, funniest talks I had were with Bob Iafrate, who was helping out my father and in some way was related to Big Al. I vaguely remember something about the two of them planning to get together when Al came to town. Knowing how funny Big Bob was and hearing about ‘The Planet’ and his wild ways, I’m sure this get together would’ve been ‘must see TV’ entertaining! Hope all is well Bob.
