Hey Beantown Chowdaheads...It's Darren Bragg...Remember Me??
June 4th 2010 13:00
Remember this fearless little muscle head, Darren Bragg?
Try to forget the fact that the Red Sox traded left-hander, Jamie Moyer, (who has gone on to win 197 games since that trade in late ’96) when you think of the Braggster. It kind of ruins things.
D-Bragg arrived on the scene after that notorious trade with Seattle and immediately took over for Lee ‘potential laden future star’ Tinsley in center field. A year or so later, Darren ‘The Spitter’ Lewis arrived and Bragg split a lot of time with him and also played a little right field in a platoon with the immortal, Damon Buford.
Boy, those were the days! All-Stars at every single goddamn position!
Anyway, Bragg’s best year was probably 1998 when he hit .279 with 8 taters and 57 steaks. Add 29 doubles and 3 triples to that and you have a D-Bragg career year in Beantown. I’m not sure if it was in ’98, but I remember him hitting a huge tater off of his ex-teammate, Randy Johnson, here at Fenway. I think it was a granny, as a matter of fact.
D-Bragg may not have been the most gifted major leaguer you’ve seen walk through that Red Sox clubhouse, but he was a fan fave for sure. He was a true grinder who played his ass off every day to the best of his ability. If you do that around these parts, well, go ask Trot Nixon. It goes a long way, and rightfully so, if you ask me.
So, D-Bragg, what have you been up to? Last I heard you were running a hitting school or something for high schoolers in the Connecticut area. Shoot me an e-mail at the site and let me know what’s up. Smitty & I would love to take you for a brewski or three.
