Hey Beantown Chowdaheads...It's Rick 'The Rooster' Burleson...Remember Me??
January 8th 2010 19:00
According to my ole man, when I would watch the Red Sox as a little kid, the word ‘Rooster’ was the first Red Sox related word that came out of my mouth. I would’ve sworn it was ‘Pudge’ but what the hell do I know? I was 3 or 4 years old. I’ll take his word for it! Dad’s getting a little older now, he’ll be 60 this year, so I tend to just agree with him more now, to keep him happy.
The ‘Rooster’, Rick Burleson, was one of the best defensive shortstops in Boston Red Sox history back when he played here from 1974-1980. He won the A.L Gold Glove back in 1979 and was elected into the Red Sox HOF in 2002.
Burleson was traded from Boston to the California Angels in the deal that brought third baseman, Carney Lansford to Boston. Lansford was a hell of a player here until my main man Boggsie told him ‘good day’ and took the third base job from him. In reality, Lansford getting hurt sliding into home was the big break that Boggsie needed to break into the majors.
The Rooster’s best offensive season in Boston probably came in 1977. He hit .293 with 36 doubles and stole 13 bases. It wasn’t about the offense with Burleson, it was all about flashing the leather.
Hope all is well Rooster. Shoot me an e-mail at the site and let me know what’s up.
