Remember Spike???
The Spikester was a teammate of Roger Clemens when both played in college for the Texas Longhorns before joining the Rocket in Boston during the infamous 1986 season.
He came to Beantown with Dave ‘Hendu’ Henderson from Seattle in August of ’86 for infielder Rey Quinones.
Owen was stellar in the ’86 postseason for a guy who never really did much with the lumber as a big leaguer. He was a very sure handed defensive shortstop but he hit .429 in the ALCS against the Angels and in the World Series against Mookie’s Mets he hit .300.
Spike, what’s been happenin’ my man? Shoot me an e-mail at the site, let me know what's up, and Smitty and I will take you out for a brewski. Last I heard you were a bench coach or something for the Rangers.
Check out Spike’s stats at Baseball Reference Note: I usually highlight the best offensive season a player had in Boston when I do this segment, but I didn’t think it called for it with Spike. Like I said, the man was known for his solid defense. Offense need not apply!
