Hey Beantown Chowdaheads...It's Todd Benzinger...Remember Me?
April 26th 2010 13:10
After Ellis Burks and Mike Greenwell made their splash with the Olde Towne Team, along came Todd Benzinger!
Benzie got the call in the summer of ’87 and made an instant impact at first base and in the outfield. He hit .278 with 8 homers and 11 doubles in only 73 games. If online sports betting was as big back then as is it now, you might’ve had a few fraud fans laying down some paper on Benzie’s MVP odds for the ’88 campaign. Most fans though, just wanted a natural progression from Benzie as that 1988 season was set to kick off. Well, .254 with 13 homers wasn’t really the ‘progression’ everyone was hoping for out of ole TB.
Benzinger never really got it going throughout his nine year career in the bigs. He did however win a World Series title in 1990 as a member of the Cincinnati Reds, but he only hit .253 with 5 homers on the season. He did however make his ex-classmates at New Richmond High School (Cincinnati) proud when he won that title, especially when he caught the last out of the series (pop up to first). Benzie was big pimpin in the Nati for a while as a Champion.
So what have you been up to Benzie? Shoot me an e-mail at the site and let me know what’s up. Smitty & I would love to take you for a brewski or three. Actually, you can pay for the drinks. You made roughly $3.7 mil over your career in baseball.
Hope all is well TB.
(Check the rest of Benzinger’s stats out at Baseball Reference )
