I’m Taking The Gloves Off, I Want New York
September 16th 2009 14:00
Nice start by Dice-K last night. He looked like a completely different guy physically and in how he was finishing off his pitches and driving off of the mound. The movement on his fastball is something that I did not see early in the year, and as a matter of fact, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen his fastball ‘move’ that much, which is a great sign. That being said, I am not going to be jumping on the Matsuzaka bandwagon like so many people are right now as I write this story. It is almost laughable to me when I hear the same people who were completely killing him earlier in the year, stand up and do a 180 and start worshipping at his altar again after one good start. I want a stretch of 3 or 4 starts, then I’ll judge him and his potential availability and how they can use him in postseason play.
If you are a Red Sox fan right now, you should be salivating for October baseball. There is something to be said for the old phrase, “everything’s coming together at exactly the right time.” Yes, Boston has had a very good season in 2009, not great but very good. The fact of the matter is this though, they are now solidly locked in with the number 1-2-3 spots in the starting rotation and if you are a Yankee fan, you don’t like what you’re seeing starting to transpire in Boston. Beckett, Lester, Buchholz and the ‘possibility’ of a rejuvenated Matsuzaka is not a delightful sign of things to come if you are Shallow Hal or Hank Steinbrenner right now. Not in the slightest. Regardless of that, there is nothing better than Red Sox/Yankee ALCS baseball and I'm hoping like hell we get to see it happen.
Our neighbors to the south are in the midst of playing some lousy baseball. Yes, they can out hit anyone in the league, that is a fact. Their starting pitching however, is in shambles right now. Think about it, you are betting the farm on a guy who is searching for a little pill that does the opposite of what Flomax does, as your number two starter in A.J. Burnett. Yes, he is looking for a pill that can magically make a human STOP pissing himself in the heat of a pennant race and beyond. Andy Pettitte is missing his scheduled start tonight with an ‘achy’ shoulder. Andy Pettitte scares me more than Burnett or anyone else outside of CC in that NY rotation come October. Big CC is sitting on an island all alone right now and we all know what his postseason resume consists of don’t we? Let’s just say if your resume looks like his, don’t be applying for employment at any other places outside of a McDonald’s or BK. CC has had a hell of year and I’ll never rule him out from having a good showing in the postseason because he is a very good pitcher, but he needs to prove it in October.
The bottom line is this, with the Red Sox rotation coming together like this along with the addition of Billy Wagner now coupled with Hideki Okajima in the pen as lefty set up men to go along with Daniel Bard setting up for Papelbon, I’m taking the gloves off, I want NY.
