Indy Decision Complete BS...'You Play To Win Theee Game'

December 28th 2009 14:13
Peyton Manning,Jim Caldwell,Colts

So I’ve collected my thoughts on this Indianapolis Colts fiasco yesterday when they decided to rest the majority of their starters in the second half of their loss to the Jets yesterday.

Here’s what I come up with…..It’s complete BS. I have no doubt that Jimmy ‘I love me some Marvin Sexual Healing Gaye’ Irsay and Mr. Polian were at the controls on this whole ‘rest’ idea. Head Coach, Jim Caldwell, will take the public hit for it all, but there is no doubt in my mind that he was ‘convinced’ that this was the best decision for the team. Rest up Peyton. Rest up Reggie. Rest up Dallas Clark. Big playoff push coming!

The group who I feel worst for in all of this is the players. The average career of an NFL player isn’t very long and when you have a chance to go chase history, you do it. You could here the disappointment in Manning and Wayne in the postgame interviews. They are huge competitors. They are in the midst of an undefeated season and want that run to continue. Who can blame them? As an organization, you owe it to the players(first and foremost), fans, and the league to go after history and give it your best to make this undefeated season a reality. They didn’t. They took the, ‘we want to be healthy and well rested heading into the postseason’ road.

I wonder if they took a look at the Patriots run at history two years ago and how they came up short in the Super Bowl from completing that magical 19-0 season. Did the Pats run out of gas? Was it mentally too much to sustain? Were there injuries that we didn’t know about? NO. The New England Patriots lost the Super Bowl to the New York Giants because of two things.. #1) The Giants D-Line had their helmets up Tom Brady’s ass on almost every snap. The pass rush was immense. #2) A wide receiver named David Tyree caught a ball off the side of his helmet in an act from a higher power as Rodney Harrison was grabbing and pulling at every part of his body outside of his twig and berries . Tyree is now out of football. Sometimes, as they say, ‘Shit Happens.’ Nothing more. Nothing less. Just ask the Patriots team of two years ago.

I tend to disagree.

While you make some very valid points (really hard to argue with most of your post, but hear me out), I'd say first and foremost you play to win the Superbowl.

Whether or not the strategy of resting their stars for the last couple games has worked in the past (obviously hasn't), the goal of the franchise should be the winning of a championship, not the winning of every game of the season if it means possible injury to their starters.

There are no trophies for a perfect regular season, a fact I know you can attest to.

nice shot at me and my fellow New England Patriot fans at the end.

If you're 13-1 or 12-2.. and you want to 'rest' your guys, which rarely works anyway, go right ahead. But when you're making a run at history, you owe it to the players and fans as well as the league, to go for it.

Wasn't a shot at all, just pointing out that yall were the only ones to come close.

And I don't think you owe the players or fans a damn thing short of a shot at winning the superbowl. You know, the championship of the league? The goal of every team?

I'll say it this way: if the Colts had kept playing Peyton and he had gotten hurt, the outcry would be far worse, and I guarantee the argument would be the same... the team owes it to the fans to have all their players functional for the playoffs.

that very well could be true (Manning scenario). We'll just agree to disagree on going for it when an opportunity like this presents itself. I understand your POV. It's just not my POV.

Now don't get me wrong. Would I have loved a perfect season? Damn right I would have (if only to have something over you nasty Bostonians).

But I can see where they made the decision, and almost feel bad for making the unpopular one.
