Is It Wrong That I Want Tiger Woods To Win The Masters?

April 8th 2010 13:15
Tiger Woods

Is it wrong that I want to see Eldrick ‘Tiger’ Woods win the Masters? I’m not necessarily ‘rooting’ for him to win, but I’d like to see it happen.

Let me explain…..

I’ll admit first and foremost, Tiger Woods just doesn’t get it. In the light of this Nike commercial this morning where his father Earl is speaking to him about what has happened---from the heavens---the point is driven home. He flat out doesn’t get it. He’s now about to monetarily capitalize on his ‘transgressions’. Tiger, if you want to golf and have your private life remain private, then go do so. However, if you want to pitch products to people worldwide, don’t bitch and moan that when you colossally screw up like you have, that your private life is private and off limits to the public. Personally, I might not need answers but if others do, hey, you’ve put yourself in the position to be questioned.

That being said, let me say that I am a pretty competitive person. Tiger Woods is at another level when it comes to competitive nature. Understood. However---being competitive---I always find it fascinating to watch athletes attempt to rise above extreme levels of adversity and mental distraction and dominate. It is what the ‘perfect’ athlete is supposed to be able to do, it’s just that the human side of us won’t allow us to do it most of the time.

On a personal note albeit on a much lesser scale of mental distraction, I can remember playing the last month of my senior year of high school baseball in the worst mental state of mind that I’ve ever experienced---to this day--- in my life. Worried about disappointing my family, I did some things that year to cover up for myself, that I am still---to this day---ashamed of doing. The place where I felt the most at ease---in between the lines on a baseball field---was never a more uncomfortable place for me then during that spring of 1994. I was physically on the field, but mentally someplace else, and I wasn't able to provide the team with all that was expected of me toward the end of that year. I felt like I had failed them & myself.

Baseball is a sport where you have a lot of time to think while playing. If something is bothering you, there is ample time during a game where the mind can wander, even for the most focused of ballplayers. One could argue that golf is very similar to baseball in regard to downtime.

Can Tiger Woods can put aside all of the embarrassment and pain he has caused his wife, family, as well as himself, and dominate the biggest tournament in professional golf this weekend? Can Tiger Woods prove that he is the most competitive, stone cold, athletic assassin we have ever seen in our lifetimes?

Is Tiger Woods the ‘perfect’ athlete?

You pretty much summed up my opinion.
