Is Michel Platini Right About England?

June 15th 2008 18:02
Michel Platini was a wizard on the field for France, and now as chief of UEFA, the governing body of European football, he has opened himself for a roasting by the UK press.

At the start of Euro 2008, he stated that England would not be missed having failed to qualify.
He said that England had not won anything since 1966, indeed not even been in a final.

He also said that if England was not capable of qualifying in the top 2 from a qualifying group it was their problem, and that Croatia and Russia had won their places fair and square given the same chance that England had been given.

All true enough - I think the point about England not being there is that the game came from England, and any major tournament had a feel of something missing if England weren't there.

To be honest though, I agree with Platini, it is no-one's fault but England's. and let's not decry those teams that *did* qualify!
