Jason Whitlock & Friends Bringing Race Into Tiger Woods Story Is Pathetic

The reaction to Tiger's preference exposes America's deep-seated racial hang-ups. Black and white people are equally troubled by Tiger's parade of Caucasian conquests. This unrest is fueling much of the media manipulation of and wallowing in this story.

"If Elin was black, this would be a Left Eye-Andre Rison situation and everyone would move on," John Salley cracked.

When I talked with sociologist Dr. Harry Edwards, he addressed the racial dynamic more seriously.

"If Elin were black, this would be on the scale of Mike Tyson and Robin Givens," Dr. Edwards explained. "It would've lasted a while and then it would just go away."

That may sound preposterous to some, but it's not. The media and the public overreact to whatever crimes/unfairness befall an attractive white woman (Natalee Holloway). Jordan, Ali and Magic all managed to play on their black wives without receiving much criticism. Shaquille O'Neal just finished off the remaining credible pieces of his marriage to a black woman by allegedly having an ongoing affair with Gilbert Arenas' fiancee. No one cares. But this brown-skinned golfer is facing ruin because he cheated on his white wife.

I understand that we'll most likely never have total racial harmony in the world. It's gotten better and most likely will continue to get better, but total harmony most likely is never coming.

That being said, are Jason Whitlock, John Salley and Dr. Harry Edwards serious here? Give me a goddamn break. I don't care if you are a doctor or not Harry, you're way off base here along with your boys, Salley and Whitlock. This is ridiculous.

Go back to the Rison/Left Eye situation or go back to the Mike Tyson/Robin Givens situation if you like. Sites like TMZ and other gossip sites as well as news breaking blogs are currently at the zenith of their existence now in 2009. In the days of the Tyson and Rison scandals it was nowhere near the way it is now. Not to mention, their stories weren't nearly as juicy as this one. Crashing his car while being chased by his golf club wielding wife on Thanksgiving night makes for some interesting news, whether his wife is white or not, wouldn't you say? We have girl after girl after girl coming forward saying they've played with Tiger's putter. Gossip sites are offering huge dough to some of these girls for text messages and other information that they've shared with Tiger and releasing them to the public masses. Was Tiger hooked on Ambien? Did Tiger have sex with one of these tramps in his own house when his wife was away? All of these people coming forward, all of this black and white (no pun intended) information coming out is what has made this a captivating media story. A story I'm quite frankly sick of hearing about but nonetheless a captivating story.

The fact that Tiger is married to a white woman or that he prefers to cheat on his white wife with other white women as an African American/Asian male, has nothing to do with how this story has been covered. If he had been sleeping with black women, asian women, green women, or purple women, it wouldn't have been covered any differently. It's bullshit theories like this that are being floated around that impede any sort of progression in terms of racial harmony in this world. Give me a break. Stop.

Elin is white?
My foundations are now shaken.

Seriously, who cares? The idolization of anyone who doesn't walk on water or isn't feeding the multitudes with 5 loaves and a couple of flounder is preposterous. My only concern with the Eldrick media tsunami is where is the best joke coming from.

When so called authorities cite their opinion, it is motivated by their own sensationalist demagoguery. The more outrageous the comment, the more notoriety, leading in turn to a fatter purse.

It is truly contemptible that we as Americans ravenously devour the pablum of what mainstream media throws to us. And it is truly despicable that this same media pins the race relations tail to whatever current-event donkey still has a patch of diversity ass showing. Again, the worst part being is that so many people will still take it seriously and rally to some extremist battle flag.

Considering my impression of the readership of this publication I get a sense of a more self-aware and inwardly aligned group. I would hope that rational people would be introspective and perform a comparative judgment to themselves and to the issue on its own merit. Blindly accepting the opinion of a self-proclaimed pundit because they tell you that they know better than you how you should feel is dangerous to a single entity and deadly to a society.

...and let's face it, we are not talking planetary ethical unification and embrasure of diversity here.

It is a horny freaking golfer. It needs no punchline. It is a punchline.

the thing i find objectionable, with regards to race, is comments from people like Glenn Beck comparing Tiger to OJ Simpson or Mike Tyson who actually physically abused/murdered their wives

as far as we know Tiger has not been abusive so i would expect him to be grouped with other celebrities known for cheating like Michael Douglas, Hugh Grant, Charlie Sheen, Jude Law, David Letterman, Bill Clinton etc, i can see the connection there, but when you group him with assaulting/homicidal black men it seems more like a racial grouping

thank you both for the well thought out & insightful comments. Whitlock is one hell of a writer who I enjoy reading but I'm simply tired of him using the race card all the time. He's better than that.
