Joe Mauer Signs Monster Deal To Remain In Minnesota…..What Now?
March 22nd 2010 17:00
OK, I’m not going to lie to any of you…..
I could already picture Joey Mauer in that white home jersey with the red lettering spelling out, RED SOX, on Opening Day 2011. Yes, we are spoiled in Boston just like the other ‘big market’ cities and can afford to dream big. Don't hate...congratulate!
That being said, how can you not be happy for Twins fans & Mauer himself, right now?
News of Mauer’s 8 year, $184 million extension must’ve had Twins Nation in ecstasy yesterday. They never get to keep one of their own who makes it big and then comes up for free agency. The big pay day for a born and raised Twin usually takes place in another city. The Twins organization is sort of like the Soup Nazi in Seinfeld except it’s…“NO DOUGH FOR YOU!”
Mauer obviously loves playing in Minnesota and wanted to work something out so he could remain in the Twin Cities. Maybe the city and Mauer are a perfect match. Maybe he didn’t want any part of the fanatical, ‘all eyes on baseball all the time’, type of hoopla that a town like Boston, New York or Philly is all about. Some players---no matter how good they are---want to live more of a private lifestyle when off the field. It’s much easier to do that where Mauer is now than it would’ve been if he signed for a little more money elsewhere, like the cities mentioned above.
My only question is, for a smaller market team that doesn’t spend all that much money (Minnesota), what kind of supporting cast will they put around Mauer? What now? This team had a $58 million payroll in 2009 . They’ve just committed over $20 mil per season to Mauer. Yes, they’re moving into a new ballpark which should create more revenue, but the fact of the matter is, Minnesota is that team that always competes but never quite gets over the hump. Does any of that change moving forward? Will Joe Mauer ever win a ring in Minnesota? Is that of the utmost importance to him? I’m just asking---not knocking Mauer per se---just asking.

Oh wait....
Or Kirby Puckett can be signed...
Oops. He is pissing in Hell's parking lot right now.
Hmmmm
They can always start turning on the giant propellors in the outfield again when the opposing team is up to bat.

IMO, Mauer is content being great and making loads of money in a city where he can chill out and relax in his high end cabin in the woods, and not give a damn about winning a title.
