Kevin Garnett Suspension Is Pure Garbage & Represents The Pussification Of Sports
April 20th 2010 14:00
I’m the first guy to go after Kevin Garnett or any of the various unlikable personalities on this Boston Celtics team. This time however, I’m coming to the defense of KG. I need to weigh in on this situation…
Garnett---as most of you know---is serving a one game suspension tonight for his elbow happy behavior in Game 1 of this opening playoff series against Miami. It seems as though everyone and their mother is attacking the piss out of this guy now that he’s been suspended and I’m a little confused.
Contact was made with Paul Pierce on the floor and Pierce subsequently hit the floor as his pinched nerve in his shoulder was aggravated. He’s down in a heap (whether he deserved an Oscar or not is neither here nor there) in front of the Miami Heat bench and KG comes over to check on his teammate. Miami’s Quentin Richardson proceeds to come over and check the situation out and gets right up on Garnett. KG obiously tells him to screw and Richardson gets closer and closer to him so KG gives him a little elbow. Then players start closing in on Garnett and in a natural reaction to this type of situation he flails his elbows in an attempt to get out of the scrum---and in doing so---lands another elbow. What would any of you do if opposing players were closing in on you like that? Would you just stand there and let them grab at you? No, you make an effort to get out of it.
I’m by no means a homer when it comes to any of these Boston teams. I’m a Boston fan in all four major sports, but by no means a homer. I always try to be objective. That being said, this suspension is total horseshit. We are in the playoffs here and emotions run a little high in this scenario. In my opinion this is another fine example of the pussification of sports. Christ, with this type of ‘discipline’ we wouldn’t have had enough players left for those classic Celtics/Pistons matchups back in the day---everyone would’ve been suspended.
As far as everyone jumping on the ‘KG is a punk bastard’ bandwagon, well, I’m confused. He’s always been known as one of the biggest trash talkers in the game. It’s how he gets his edge. He’s an athletic verbal bully of sorts---for sure---and I’m not necessarily a fan of it, but if it’s how he gets his edge, who am I to argue. He’s one of the most competitive athletes I’ve watched come through this town. I guess I’m just not understanding how this incident has put people over the edge saying, “we don’t like KG anymore” and everyone seems to be piling on and pissing on this guy.

I've knocked the piss out of these guys and how they act on the court. Not my cup of tea, however, I thought this got taken way too seriously. When I watched it again, Garnett was getting closed in on by mostly Heat players, IMO, it's just a natural reaction to get out of it by flailing. Did he want to land an elbow? Maybe he did, but like I brought up, it's the pussification of sports in this era. Fine him and lets get on with the playoffs. Suspension is foolish.
