Larry Bird Sure Knew How To Collect On His Winning Wagers

Check this out excerpt from Steve Bulpett's piece in the Herald ... He's talking about when Larry Bird won the 3-point Shootout 24 years ago. Paul Pierce just won it this past weekend during All Star Weekend in Dallas. Funny stuff!
Larry had bet pretty much everyone on the Celts that he would win, and he’d written the wagers down in one of those little dime store memo books. So when the players came through the lobby to head to work, Bird stopped them to collect, dutifully checking off the names of those who paid.
“OK, let’s see how much you owe me,” he’d say regarding bets that would seem a pittance today. “I told you I was going to be the 3-point king, and I won it.”
The best part about this story is that you KNOW it’s no BS. You can be 100% sure that this is pure gospel truth.
LB mowed his own lawn when he lived in Brookline for Christ sake! The start of his career ending back injury occurred when he paved his own basketball court at his house in Indiana. “I don’t pay somebody to do a job I can do myself.”
Did anyone ever know and respect the value of a greenback more than LB? If they had ‘MTV Cribs’ back in 1986 and wanted to have Bird on the show, they would’ve made a huge mistake. LB’s fridge most likely consisted of Miller Lite, Ho-Ho’s and whatever take-out leftovers from the previous nights dinner. Not to mention he probably had supermarket coupons from the Sunday Globe circulars up on the front of the fridge held by freebie Celtics magnets that Red gave to all his players. No personal chef or live-in maid at LB’s! Man knew the value of a dollar. “Larry, can we take the cameras to your garage and get a look at the luxurious fleet of vehicles?”….. “Fella’s, I drive a dented Ford pickup. Knock yourselves out if you want footage of it. It’s in there. Still runs like a charm.”
When you make a bet with a man like this, he writes down your ‘name’… ‘time of bet’…and ‘wager amount’…in his little miniature memo book. You lose to him? Pay him NOW. Not tomorrow. NOW. No payment plans either. LB don’t do interest. He hands out ass-whoopins as a late fee.
