Lowell For Max Ramirez? Say It Aint So Theo

December 10th 2009 13:56
Mike Lowell,Boston Red Sox

I’m strictly reacting here… so bear with me…

If this Mike Lowell for Max (no I’m not related to Manny, I’m just a .230 minor league hitting catcher)Ramirez is true, then the other shoe better drop and it better drop in a better way than I’m hearing it might drop. Rumor is that this deal is waiting to be approved by MLB today that would bring Ramirez to Boston and send Lowell to the Texas Rangers. Here’s the kicker….the Red Sox are supposedly going to also pay $9 million of the $12 million that’s owed to Lowell this year! Obviously this deal is greasing the skids for another big deal to drop (I’m reminded of the Celtics and the Ray Allen deal a few years ago before they landed the Big Ticket KG). That being said, I do not like the rumors of that ‘other shoe’ being third baseman, Adrian Beltre. Yes, Beltre and his .300 OBP that flies in the face of everything Theo Epstein supposedly believes in when it comes to judging players. Beltre is a great defensive third baseman but this deal is a crock of shit. If that other shoe is Adrian Gonzalez from San Diego than I’m fine with this happening. If it’s for Miguel Cabrera from Detroit, I might be able to be convinced, but I despise anyone who has ever put their hands on a woman, so it would be hard for me as a fan to accept. Anything less, then I just don’t understand the thinking on the Red Sox part on this one.

Let me clarify my stance here... The actual trade of Lowell for Ramirez doesn't bother me, so the title, since I was pissed at the time, is a little misleading. Trading a banged up vet for a young catcher doesn't bother me, it's the supposed after-effects of overpaying for a marginal ballplayer like Beltre and paying Lowell's salary. Makes no sense and seems so reckless financially. Name me another team who continuously trades guys to other teams and pays the salary for the player they trade while doing so? It's ridiculous.
