MLB Reliever Matt Herges’ Comments On His Steroid Use Very Refreshing
March 5th 2010 14:00
(Comments from MLB reliever, Matt Herges that I read on Mark Calcaterra’s blog, ‘Hardball Talk’)
"I know what steroids did for me. It made me superhuman," Herges said. "It made me an android, basically. Your body shuts down, and the stuff takes over. You had guys throwing harder than 95 mph when they had barely touched 90 mph their whole life. It wasn't just that but the strength, the confidence it did for you. "The confidence, the feel, the results, is mentally addictive. It's habit-forming to say the least."
Quite frankly, I love the honesty of Herges here... It’s very refreshing to hear someone tell the truth rather than hear, “steroids did nothing for me but help me heal faster”, BS from the Mark McGwire’s of the world .
Calcaterra makes many points in his post that I agree with on the topic of middle relievers and potential steroid/PED use. The public usually falls into the trap of just pointing out all of the various offensive players that we think have used--- stars or otherwise. People don’t usually think of the middle of the road reliever who went from being plain ole Clark Kent one season to Superman the next. Herges was one of many middle relievers who ditched Clark's glasses and put on tights and a cape during that time.
