Papelbon Uses His Postseason Failure As Motivational Tool While Pumping Iron

( From Amalie Benjamin's column in Boston.com )
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Whenever Jonathan Papelbon lost his will in the weight room this offseason, he would turn on the television. There, he would watch himself falter and fail, bringing an end to his postseason scoreless streak, the Red Sox’ lead in Game 3 of last season’s American League Division Series, and eventually the Sox’ season.
“I’ve got it on tape and I watched it 100 times in my weight room,’’ Papelbon said yesterday, in his first meeting with the media since allowing three runs to the Angels and taking the blown save and the loss in the game that concluded 2009 for the Red Sox. “I used it as motivation when I was feeling tired and weak. I’d pop it on, and kind of go over and say, ‘There’s still work to be done.’ ’’
Now this is why I want this psycho closing for my team, any day of the week. I called BS instantly when I was blowing my whole paycheck-- checking out that new Whole Foods at Legacy Place in Dedham, back in October--and I picked up the Herald while wifey was waiting in line. A reporter asked Paps, “how long will this loss (blowing save to end season in playoffs) stick with you.” Paps basically said once he leaves the park, he leaves the game behind.
That’s not your makeup Paps. You know it. I know it. The rest of the fan base--including the pink hats-- should know it. Good to see that you confirmed that fact as you worked out like a madman with the Rocky soundtrack blaring and watched yourself fail for motivational use. Personally, I love that shit. I eat that shit up. I’d be the same way. You might say some stupid shit sometimes to the press or whatever, but I don’t care. Maybe suffering a little postseason adversity last season will be just what the doctor ordered as you come back with a chip on your shoulder in 2010 and dominate the collective asses off of your opponents.
