Rajon Rondo Calls Out His Celtics Teammates & Their Own Agendas
February 3rd 2010 17:13
(From the Boston Herald )
“It’s a different team this year,” Rondo said then. “That’s our problem. A couple of years ago, we didn’t have the same team. We had the same main guys, but it’s still a team effort, from the first guy to the 15th guy.”
He still wasn’t getting into specifics in this latest discussion, but his comments were far stronger.
“I can’t really elaborate on it too much, but I think we’ve just got to be a team with no agendas,” Rondo said. “We’ve got to play unselfish, you know? That’s on defense and offense. You’ve got to want the best for the next man out there regardless if you’re in the game playing well or you’re out of the game not playing well.”
I have to say, that is not what this Celtics team needs to have happen right now. Personal agendas? This team is beat up and old enough. Quite honestly, they are most likely in the last year of this ‘New Big Three’ era and I don’t know if I like where this is headed.
Who is to blame for the problems in the room? KG has always been the vocal leader as well as the leader by example on this basketball team since he arrived here. Has that leadership waned due to his constantly aching body? Has he lost some of his desire to lead? I’d lean toward ‘no’ on that question, but one never knows. When you’re hurt like he’s been, it challenges you in every way you can imagine. It taxes you so much mentally---just getting your body ready to play. Again, I lead toward KG not being the problem, but it’s something to consider. They depend on his spirit and leadership so much. Paul Pierce is not an emotional leader anywhere near the levels of a KG. Rasheed Wallace?? Big Baby?? Eddie House?? Are these guys all on the same page? Depending on who you talk to, Ray Allen is being dangled around in trade rumors right now as his contract is about to expire. Is Rondo referring to Allen having an agenda? Who knows.
I have no problem with Rajon Rondo making the statement that he made, as long as he can honestly look in the mirror and say that he wouldn’t have had his own agenda had he not signed his lucrative multi-year contract extension. If Rondo didn’t sign that deal before this season and he was playing without an extension, would he have his ‘own agenda?’ Just asking. Oh, and I hope this was hashed over in a team meeting before Rondo took this to the media, because if it wasn't, that is a recipe for disaster.
