Rajon Rondo Proving He’s Worth Every Penny Over On Causeway Street
December 16th 2009 13:51
Anyone taking note of what a beast Rajon Rondo is becoming here for the Boston Celtics in 2009? He is proving to the world that the 5 year/$55 million contract extension he signed before the season is worth every penny.
Rondo is coming off of a tremendous playoff run last year where he averaged 17 ppg, 9.8 apg, 9.7 rpg totals while picking up the slack for the injured ‘Big Ticket’, Kevin Garnett.
The knock on Rondo has always been his lack of a consistent jump shot and this year he is displaying a new found confidence in taking the 15-20 footer as he is without a doubt improving as of late. He also is only a 63% career free throw shooter and started off this season looking like Shaq from the stripe as he was shooting around 50%. Over the past 7 games where he has attempted a free throw, Rondo is shooting 71% (17-24). He is tied for 2nd in the NBA among point guards in field goal percentage as well. Obviously his ability to drive the lane and take it to the hole helps this stat, but check out the trend Rondo has blazed since his rookie year of 2006 in terms of FG%…
’06--- 42%
’07--- 49%
’08--- 51%
’09 (so far)--- 54%
’07--- 49%
’08--- 51%
’09 (so far)--- 54%
He’s always been able to dish the rock and he’s averaging 9.5 helpers with almost two months of the season in the books. That average is good for fourth in the NBA right now.
The thing that most impresses me about watching this kid play hoop is the fact that he’s always improving. His rebounding for a guy his size and the position he plays is second to none. Oh, and that flair for the dramatic with the fake behind the back pass when he’s driving the lane. Special things are brewing down on Causeway St. once again. The Boston Celtics are the best team in basketball and Rajon Rondo is a huge part of all the fun.
