Random ‘Two Cents’ On Patriots…..Wes Welker’s Injury, Tom Brady & More
January 4th 2010 16:00
** Yes, he's gone. Yes, it's a horrible loss for this New England Patriots football team. No, Bill Belichick did not screw up by playing his starters in this football game yesterday.
Over the past three weeks or so, this Patriots offense had begun to click. Tom Brady is Tom Brady again. However, it hasn't been that way all year long, has it? No. Now that it was clicking, you could not sit them down for a whole game. Play them one half and get them out, was my opinion going into this game. I have ZERO problem with what Billy did yesterday. Sometimes, as they say, 'shit happens', and that's exactly what happened yesterday. This is football.
As far as Wes Welker is concerned, with all reports that this is a torn MCL & ACL, this is not good. For a wide receiver that relies so heavily on his quick cuts after the catch, he may never be the same again after surgery. One never knows. That would be a shame.
** The ‘IN-OUT…IN-OUT’ management of Tom Brady yesterday puzzles me for sure. Once he was taken out, why didn’t he stay out? Once he was put back in, why didn’t he stay in? We got the standard, “that’s how we wanted to play the game”, monotone response from Darth Vader Billy. Did you expect anything more than that? I understand not giving the media and fans much to work with if that’s how you want to play it as an NFL head coach, but don’t you want to reach through the TV sometimes while watching his press conferences and shake the shit out of that pasty looking bastard? Give us something coach…something! I know it won’t happen but sometimes it would be great if you'd just give us a simple answer, coach.
** This first round opponent, the Baltimore Ravens (Sunday, 1pm), doesn’t really scare me anymore than any other potential first round opponent the Patriots could’ve faced. This isn’t the same Rex Ryan defense that Baltimore dominated with in years past. The one guy who scares the daylights out of me is on offense and it’s former Rutgers running back, Ray Rice. What an explosive player this kid is for the Ravens. Keeping him under control will be a key for the young Patriots defense on Sunday.
** Julian Edelman will have plenty of opportunity to shine for however long this Patriots postseason run lasts due to the loss of Welker. You think Randy Moss was double covered a lot when Welker was playing along side him? Watch now. He will be blanketed by Baltimore and guys like Edelman and Benjamin Watson will have to step up their game. They will have ample opportunities to make some big catches for this football team moving forward.
** Anyone catch the performance of Denver wide receiver, Jabar Gaffney, yesterday? 14 catches for 213 yards receiving. Now that the Broncos season is over (who would’ve thought that after a 6-0 start and the Josh McDaniels Rain Dance on the field after beating his mentor & the Patriots) can you guys lend him back to New England for a few weeks? He was always good for a clutch catch or two while he was here. He’d make a nice target for Tommy Bundchen as we kick off the playoffs. Moss, Gaffney, Edelman sounds a little better than Moss, Edelman, Aiken.
