Random Two Cents---David Ortiz, Lenny Dykstra, Rush Limbaugh, John Madden

*** When watching #6 for the Phillies in Games 3 and 4 of the NLDS against Colorado, I couldn’t help but have flashbacks to the David Ortiz glory days. Ryan Howard was fantastic in those two games. He is an athlete you want to root for in this age. Has a lot of fun playing the game, produces in the clutch and is a leader on that Phillies team. These days we’re lucky to get a half-hearted jog down the line out of Ortiz as he grounds out to second. If there ever was a more obvious case of chemicals enhancing an athlete in MLB, you tell me what the case was and who…and don’t say Barry Bonds or A-Rod or even Manny. All three of them had twice the amount of natural ability than David Ortiz had when it came to talent. It’s sad but true, David Ortiz was the prototypical “steroids/PED’s made me something I wasn’t” case and it sucks. There wasn’t a better athlete to root for back then whether you were an adult or a kid. If David Ortiz was on any other team or God forbid---a YANKEE---this town would’ve ate him up and spit him out worse than anyone you’ve ever seen. Truth is truth. (and yes, the pic above is David Ortiz before he changed his name. Pic is from 1997)
*** So John Madden watches football at his house in Cali on Sunday’s now I hear..He has nine 63” HD TV’s to go along with a main projection screen of 16 feet by 9 feet. Good livin’ Johnny, good livin’! According to Sports Illustrated, he had the fathers of Carson Palmer, Trent Edwards, Drew Brees, Matthew Stafford and Matt Hasselbeck over to watch some football a couple of weeks ago. Oh, and one more I forgot, the father of Peyton and Eli Manning, ex-NFL star Archie Manning. Here’s my question.. When it’s time for another round of beers, does Archie stand up and start pointing and shouting out audibles like Peyton to decide who goes to the fridge? We all know, there is no way the ‘holier than thou’ father in the Holy Trinity of QB’s posse goes and gets anybody a beer. No way.
*** So Lenny ‘Nails’ Dykstra got $56,762 for his 1986 World Series ring that he won when his Mets beat my beloved Red Sox. That’s the good news. The bad news is that Lenny still owes $31 million to his creditors. What to do Lenny… what to do?? Here’s an idea… Why not call up ex-teammate Keith Hernandez and see if he can get Emmitt Smith fired from those fantastic ‘Just For Men’ commercials he does with him. I can see it now.. “Yo dudes, you got some gray hairs in your beards or on your domes, be like Nails and wash dat shit away with some Just For Men.. and best of all it don’t cost you much ‘cheddar’ dudes. It’s only $15.99 if you enter dat code on da bottom of da TV Screen when you order.”
*** I don’t, and won’t get into politics etc.. on this site, but please spare me this whole “black athletes will boycott any NFL football team Rush Limbaugh owns” crap. Flat out, just won’t happen. If Rush buys the St. Louis Rams franchise and offers the most money to the athlete.. the athlete will sign. Do you really think what Limbaugh said about Donovan Mc Nabb back in 2003 will make one bit of difference today? Here’s what he said..
"I don't think he's been that good from the get-go. I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They're interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. I think there's a little hope invested in McNabb and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."
Find the audio clip of that ESPN pre-game show comment and you’ll hear Michael Irvin (an ex-NFL superstar of African American descent) say, “Rush is right.” Do you really think that comment will affect anything in terms of signing players? No, it won’t. I’m not saying I agree with the Limbaugh’s comment about the media being desirous that a black quarterback or black coach does well, because I don’t. I think the media is perfectly content with it going the other way. They don’t sell the most newspapers when ‘good things’ happen, or people ‘do well’.. Point blank, negativity sells, it doesn’t matter if your Black, White, Chinese, Japanese, or Latino. It just doesn’t.Chuck

All these years I had no feelings either way regarding the Rams. Now I could have a reason to root against them. Adds another element to my NFL enjoyment.

P.S. Some teams take the opportunity to reminisce in their throwback uniforms.
My beloved Broncos do so in their throw-up uniforms. My God. Nauseating the opponent shouldn't be part of any game plan.
Sorry about that carny event, Pats fans. Well played and good game.
