Sammy Sosa

For Christ sakes Sammy, MJ was simply trying to convince himself by singing that lyric over and over, to make a change in his life and stay away from inviting young boys to his house and giving them complimentary sips of 'Jesus Juice'. He didn't really mean to look in the mirror and change your physical appearance! WTF! Were you attempting to exfoliate and something went very wrong?

New York Yankees,World Series Champs 2009

OK, I'm tired of the whole 'Yankees bought the championship thing.' It's garbage. The Yankees have spent the most money in baseball by a substantial margin over the past decade and haven't won much of anything since 2000. Yes, they are in position to win every year because they spend money, but it doesn't guarantee a championship....ever. So many factors come into play when you win a championship. Staying healthy, coming together as a team, clutch performances, not to mention spending money on the right players. The Yankees had that this year and with the money that they spend, it all came together. In my humble opinion, it's teams like Pittsburgh, Washington, Florida and San Diego that don't even spend $60K per year on payroll, that MLB has to do something about sooner than later. You can't have it. Either pony up the cash it takes to compete or get out fellas. I just don't see a salary cap ever happening in baseball, but if it did, I'd be all for it. However, a lot of Red Sox fans who complain about how much the Yankees spend blah blah.. might not be so happy with a salary cap. Boston spends more money than most of MLB on players and we also are in a great situation as fans. Boston has won two titles since 2004.. Who spent the most money those years on salary? Yup, New York. You can't just 'buy' a championship. The Red Sox are in position to win every year, just like New York and others. If a salary cap comes into play, it becomes a total organizational effort. Money alone won't be able to put you in position anymore.

Adrian Gonzalez,San Diego Padres,MLB

Like everyone else, I'm intrigued by Adrian Gonzalez' name being mentioned in trade rumors and potentially coming to Boston. He is a tremendous talent. That being said, I just don't see him being moved before the trading deadline at earliest. The market for him will explode at that time and San Diego will be able to get so much more for him than they could now. It's almost that time of year where the hot stove gets fired up and we get a glimpse at what moves will be going down for the 2010 season.. I can't wait.

I know you heart A-Rod Chuck, but do you really believe that they didn't buy a championship. I can see what you're saying, but I'm on the line between belief and reality. You can buy championships. That pretty much the only way you can in them these days. Any team in the top 5 salary can be said to have bought a championship when and if they win it.

Also, is that picture of Sammy Sosa real? If so, I think he's trying to draw the attention back away from McGwire after he returned to baseball as a hitting coach.

Good stuff as always, works been hectic, haven't been able to read or even write much lately, hope all is well.

all is well Gansie, thanks for stopping by..

The pic of Sosa is real, yes. Apparently he's trying some skin rejuvenation routine and these are the consequences.

What I'm saying about the Yankees is, yes, they put themselves in position to win every year. More than everyone else in fact. I'll accept that, but that's all it is, is position. They have had the number one payroll in MLB for the past decade and haven't won since 2000, before this current one. So, you can't just buy titles. It's proven. It that was the case they'd win it every year, was the point I was making.

But at the same time, like you mentioned the teams spending $60K not winning at all. Check the payroll of the past 10 WS winners, I bet they're all in the top 5.

I understand you're saying having the highest payroll doesn't guarantee a championship, but you do have to spend in the top 5 area to do so, thus, buying championships does happen.

spending money 'positions' you to win titles is my point. Yes it does. At the same time, in the post I did say something has to be done to make more of a competitive balance.

I don't think Tampa Bay is in the top five in spending, nor were the Marlins. The Twins are contenders every year. Boston started doing very well for itself when it started spending money on top players and protecting top prospects, the same formula the Yanks employ.

George Steinbrenner, after he and his group bought the Yanks for $10 million from Mike Burke, reasoned that if you spend money and give the fanatical New York fans the best product, they will support the team no matter the price of the tickets. He has parlayed this into his YES sports empire.

I've been a Yank fan for more than 58 years, and I raised my sons to be Yank fans. But, the games we enjoy most are those against the Sox; that is the greatest sports rivalry, not the World Series, the NBA Championship, the Stanley Cup, or anything else. Keep blogging; I enjoy your analysis.

This format and unusual storylines are your strong suit........Give us more of them both ....... It separates you from the pack.........And to Mike, yes Twins,Rays are always contending but other than the Marlins and I believe they spent a small fortune the years they won, the best they ever do is contend. Lots of teams, small amount of outstanding talent equals who ever pays the most for that talent....THEY ARE THE CHAMPIONS........

they pay the most every year CofA. Most years it between $30-50 MILLION more. They haven't won before this year since 2000 so how is it that if you pay the most you win? Once again, it puts you in POSITION to win. Just like it puts the Red Sox, Angels, Phillies, Mets in postion to win. You spend to contend. Yankees have spent unwisely many of those years and haven't won squat becuase of it.

Glad you like this segment. Tomorrow I introduce the TCFB---Femme Fatale of the Week, hope you enjoy that too!
