August 16th
The only fatality to occur in a major league baseball game happened. Ray Chapman (Cleveland Indians) was hit in the head with a fastball from Carl Mays of the New York Yankees. (1920)
Babe Ruth died at the age of 53. (1948)
Sports Illustrated was published for the first time. It was claimed that 250,000 subscriptions had been sold before the first issue came off of the presses. (1954)
Cal Ripken Jr. got his first major league hit.(1981)
Happy Birthday to the following people. If any of you are dead now & I missed the news, I apologize. I'm trying to be nice here...
Happy 80th to former NFL baller & sportscaster, Frank Gifford. Tell Kathie Lee I said "what up."
Happy 41st to former Pats Tight End & fav target of the ex-"franchise" Drew Bledsoe, Ben Coates.
& for my "non-sports" birthday wishes...
Happy 52nd to singer/superstar, Madonna. Definitely not "like a virgin" any longer, but still doing her thing.
Chuck
