Same Ole Rexy, He's Only Wearing Different Colors Now

September 21st 2009 11:33
Rex Ryan,New York Jets,NFL,Head Coach

Whether you are a New England Patriots fan jumping in your car or utilizing public transportation to get to work on this fine Monday morning, armed with your morning 'cup of joe' in hand, don't forget to give a little mental tip of the cap to Rex Ryan and his New York Jets for yesterdays performance over your New England Patriots. The Jets took down a team that has been the big bad bully of the AFC East over the past decade and sometimes you have to give credit where credit is due.

It is very apparent that Tom Brady doesn't have all the rust off of his game quite yet, of that there is no question. If you think otherwise, you must've been firing up your DVR and catching up on your T.O. Show episodes, because it's quite obvious that Brady isn't there quite yet if you actually watched this contest. Consider this though, maybe that's not the whole story. Think back to a Monday night in 2007, a night when the Patriots were attempting to become the first Patriot team to start a season with a perfect 12-0 record on Monday Night Football. Who was the opponent that night you ask? Was it the Jets? No, my old 2007 schedule says it was the Baltimore Ravens. What's my point, you ask? Take a look a this snippet from an NFL scout when assessing the result of that game:

"Quarterback Tom Brady and the Patriots used the no-huddle offense to limit the Ravens’ ability to use situational substituting, while Baltimore defensive coordinator Rex Ryan used different looks for all blitz packages in an attempt to disguise what the Ravens were going to do."

Do you remember that game? It was a great football game--albeit nerve racking as all hell if you were a Patriots fan--where Tom Brady was held to 18-38 for 257 yards including 2 TD and 1 INT, hardly the glossy high end numbers we were all used to getting out of number twelve. If it wasn't for an ill-advised time out call by the Ravens coaching staff( I think it might've actually been Ryan who screwed up and called for that timeout) toward the end of that contest, they would've given the Pats their first loss of what became the 'perfect regular season' for New England until they fell in the Super Bowl against the New York Football Giants. That being said, the Patriots snuck away with a 27-24 victory. Ryan was brilliant that night in mixing in various blitz packages and pressuring the hell out of Brady and company. If you watched yesterdays game, it was like you were looking at the same type of nasty Baltimore defenses that Ryan was a part of designing for so many years in Baltimore.

I have never had a problem with some tasteful trash talking or grandstanding when it comes to sports. All I say is, if you're going to talk it you better back it up brotha! Well, Jets safety Kerry Rhodes, linebacker Bart Scott and Head Coach Rex Ryan all backed it up yesterday. Their team won the game. Rexy and his very odd voicemail message that he left for all the Jets season ticket holder's last week, telling them he needed them to show up and be as vocal as they've ever been and how he and the team really needed them in this game versus New England, all worked out. Last time I checked though, Jets fans are out in force every week screaming their lungs out led by that annoying goddamn fireman every week. The bottom line is you need to win Rex. Forget about challenging a rabid, loyal, New York fan base. That is amateur hour at its finest. All that being said, no matter what I think of it, it all worked out for Rexy and the boys. Congrats, you drew up a hell of a gameplan once again, that was executed by a very active exciting defense you've put your stamp on in New York. Darth Vader Billy B and the boys will be waiting for you up in Gillette on November 22nd for what I'm sure will be a hell of a football game. Gotta love having the J-E-T-S back on the right track again. Where have you been fellas? I've missed this rivalry.

They just looked like they didn't want to be there. It might have been my aged ears or the fact I was taking a leak at the time but were the fans chanting "BRADY SUCKS"?
Very Classy. I have a feeling Tom will have an offensive ass-beatin ready for 11/22.

I am obviously not from the East Coast but I would think that New York fans would be typically cynical and intolerant of geeks. That guy in the fireman outfit is like a bad acid trip in mint and white. Whoever was sitting behind him should have kicked him in the kidney so they could watch the game. Can I vote for him as asshat of the week?

Honestly just a bump in the road for the Brady bunch.

By the way, 2 and 0 out west. For some reason Orange is not available as a text color in this blog. Hmmmm

If this the Denver fan I think it might be?...Thanks for noticing that I pulled 'burnt orange' from my text color selections! lol.. Really I didn't but it all works if it disappoints Bronco fans!! Thanks for the comment and your effort to console New England fans. It is only a bump in the road to a 13-3 season like yours truly predicted!! However, you will probably be hearing Pats fans on the radio today declaring they won't make the playoffs etc... Gotta love Boston/New England!

I was going to refer to "Fireman Vinny" as a DB but I thought it might be a little obvious a hint.

P.S. Can somebody please replace the current B.C. quarterback with a sack of crap. I am betting the sack of crap will not try to run the ball every time it get's a little pressure on a pass play. Heck get his Dad in to play quarterback. Anything would be an improvement.

I agree that everyone is going to claim that the season is over after one loss, but we know better than that. I think it's, like you said, just the Boston/New England attitude to say that the season is lost after one game (in week 2) and forget everything they said once we win in week 3.

Albeit, losing in week 2 to a division rival is not a good thing, but I'm sure we'll be fine. I also say 13-3 this year.
