"Say it Ain't So, Brett!"

May 7th 2009 16:47

Brett Favre is a 3 time MVP of the NFL. He is also a 10 time Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl Champion….but he just can’t say goodbye. When I see Favre or read anything about him now, all I can think of or equate him to, is a punch drunk boxer who just can’t get himself out of the ring and has to keep fighting way past his prime. Evander Holyfield comes to mind in this regard. Evander, Jose Canseco needs an opponent for his next pay per view event if you're interested.

I always thought it was sad to see Michael Jordan come back into the NBA wearing a Washington Wizards uniform after all of those glorious years as a Chicago Bull. He was a shell of his former self when he was in Washington. Well, Brett Favre had his Washington Wizard moment last year when he hooked on with the New York Jets and that was, to a degree, not something I wanted to see as a sports fan. Brett Favre WAS Green Bay. He was adored in Green Bay and he fit the image of what the working class people of that area wanted in their quarterback in terms of toughness and grit. He was a gunslinger who took his chances over his time there but more times than not, he delivered. He just always seemed to take one chance too many in a big playoff game or big regular season game that would hurt his team in a big moment. That is why I was surprised to see a comment from a reader of the Minneapolis Star saying that Favre, “may not have the arm anymore, but makes good decisions.” Hello, was your TV broken for the Jets/Dolphins fiasco in the playoffs last year at the Meadowlands? Good decisions??

Favre’s “Brett Favre Foundation” has donated more than $2 million to charities in his home state of Mississippi and in Green Bay. He has been a tireless worker for various charities and he is considered a great man by many people. He was nominated for an Oscar for his cameo in the hilarious hit, There’s Something About Mary back in 1998(well OK, not quite an Oscar nomination, but if they had an Oscar for bad acting he would’ve been a contender. Also a side note on that role, did you know Drew Bledsoe was offered the role first and turned it down?) He has been a joy to watch on Sundays since his career kicked off as an Atlanta Falcon in 1991.

That being said, please Brett, just hang em up. You have nothing to prove to Green Bay by coming back as a Viking. You’ve had your “Jordan” moment, let’s not take it a step further and make it any worse. Preserve some of your great legacy while you still can and call it a day. When people start looking at one of the greatest quarterbacks of our generation as a semi-joke who can't hang em up and move on, it's a shame.
