Sheed Wallace Says “Ball Don’t Lie”… TCFB Says “Numbers Don’t Lie”…Beltre vs Gonzalez Edition
July 1st 2010 15:30
Got this in my inbox yesterday from the “droppin stats like it aint no thang” TCFB stat man. This guy’s good. The Globe & Herald can keep their respective stat guys that they showcase on Sunday’s. I have my own. Try to tamper & see what happens to your sorry asses. Here’s the message…..
“Psst: Remember all of us wanting Adrian Gonzalez? We got him, just changed last name to Beltre”
Adrian Gonzalez (SD)----- .302---16 dongs---51 steaks---19 doubles
Adrian Beltre (BOS)----- .349---12 dongs---52 steaks---23 doubles

But what the hell is a "steak"?

371 is a unique number: 371 = 7 × 53, Armstrong number since 33 73 13 = 371, sum of three consecutive primes (113 127 131), sum of seven consecutive primes (41 43 47 53 59 61 67), sum of the primes from its least to its greatest prime factor (sequence A055233 in OEIS), the next such composite number is 2935561623745 (wikipedia).
But 371 means something to Beltre as well.
Sports Guru, I think you have some floatable points, especially in regards to the picthers park in the best weather in the country's city. But under scrutiny, methinks you start to sink (sink, not stink, I'm merely completing the metaphot, not casting aspersions). Under the scrutiny, Betre's number's are not fluff, meaning, he has put up some of his best numbers - ones that actually skew better than his overall seasonal average - when it's crunch time and pitchers are bearing down hard on him. To steal from the Globe article,
"Entering last night’s game Beltre led all players at the position with a .948 OPS. He led the AL with a .390 average with runners in scoring position. He was second in the majors in road average (.371). He also led the majors with a .336 average when there were two strikes on him. He’s hit safely in 17 of 18 games."
Take a look at that ROAD average: THREE-SEVEN-ONE. Which means his home average - in the hitter's park of the Fens - is actually pulling his overall average down to a pedestrian .349.
nope, Agon is is no way shape or form better than The Rib-Breaker this year. Who'd I rather have for a 4 yr contract? Agon. Who would I rather have right now (and, incidently fits in better right now positionly): A-Belt.
BTW, I'm trying out that nickname for him, A-Belt. Or the One-Kneed Wonder. We'll see...

Holt & Joe, I agree with your second to last paragraph, Holt. Long term deal, give me A-Gon. He is a better player overall. This year, the OKK (One Kneed Krusher) is playing for a long term contract and is flourishing. That said, unless he and Papi have found harmony and are on the same Flinstone Vitamin regime, I don't want OKK here past this year. It only gets worse from here. He is, shall we say, "peaking" under pressure. I'd be very wary of signing him to multi year deal after this campaign.
