TCFB,Numbers Don't Lie

Got this in my inbox yesterday from the “droppin stats like it aint no thang” TCFB stat man. This guy’s good. The Globe & Herald can keep their respective stat guys that they showcase on Sunday’s. I have my own. Try to tamper & see what happens to your sorry asses. Here’s the message…..

“Psst: Remember all of us wanting Adrian Gonzalez? We got him, just changed last name to Beltre”

Adrian Gonzalez,San Diego Padres

Adrian Gonzalez (SD)----- .302---16 dongs---51 steaks---19 doubles

Adrian Beltre,Boston Red Sox

Adrian Beltre (BOS)----- .349---12 dongs---52 steaks---23 doubles

I got a little argument from the TCFB argue if I may be called that. I think Adrian Gonzalez is a much better player. First off, Gonzalez plays on a team with no support to protect him or get on base. Chase Headley is the best thing he has. Beltre is on a stacked line up and in a great hitter's park called Fenway- have you heard of that dump guys? I hope you know I'm kidding, I love Fenway. Anyway, PETCO- where AD-GO plays- is arguably the friendliest park for pitchers. Just ask Jake Peavy, the ace for the other Sox.

Hey I have a hard enough time letting go of the outdated stat, "RBI" because Theo said so. I am still working on OPS.

But what the hell is a "steak"?

Great timing Chuck, as the Globe came out with a parallel article today, so you've got good company.

371 is a unique number: 371 = 7 × 53, Armstrong number since 33 73 13 = 371, sum of three consecutive primes (113 127 131), sum of seven consecutive primes (41 43 47 53 59 61 67), sum of the primes from its least to its greatest prime factor (sequence A055233 in OEIS), the next such composite number is 2935561623745 (wikipedia).

But 371 means something to Beltre as well.

Sports Guru, I think you have some floatable points, especially in regards to the picthers park in the best weather in the country's city. But under scrutiny, methinks you start to sink (sink, not stink, I'm merely completing the metaphot, not casting aspersions). Under the scrutiny, Betre's number's are not fluff, meaning, he has put up some of his best numbers - ones that actually skew better than his overall seasonal average - when it's crunch time and pitchers are bearing down hard on him. To steal from the Globe article,

"Entering last night’s game Beltre led all players at the position with a .948 OPS. He led the AL with a .390 average with runners in scoring position. He was second in the majors in road average (.371). He also led the majors with a .336 average when there were two strikes on him. He’s hit safely in 17 of 18 games."

Take a look at that ROAD average: THREE-SEVEN-ONE. Which means his home average - in the hitter's park of the Fens - is actually pulling his overall average down to a pedestrian .349.

nope, Agon is is no way shape or form better than The Rib-Breaker this year. Who'd I rather have for a 4 yr contract? Agon. Who would I rather have right now (and, incidently fits in better right now positionly): A-Belt.

BTW, I'm trying out that nickname for him, A-Belt. Or the One-Kneed Wonder. We'll see...

Rib-eye = steak = RBI..

Holt & Joe, I agree with your second to last paragraph, Holt. Long term deal, give me A-Gon. He is a better player overall. This year, the OKK (One Kneed Krusher) is playing for a long term contract and is flourishing. That said, unless he and Papi have found harmony and are on the same Flinstone Vitamin regime, I don't want OKK here past this year. It only gets worse from here. He is, shall we say, "peaking" under pressure. I'd be very wary of signing him to multi year deal after this campaign.

Yo Holt, in no way was I saying that Beltre isn't doing amazing. Beltre is doing great and having an incredible year. Did I mention he is one of my favorite players? Did I also mention he nearly died when doctors botched a routine appendectomy? Anyway, all I was saying was that Adrian Gonzalez is better than Beltre. However, Beltre is still a damn good ballplayer.
