Soviets Still Quite Pissed Off & Full Of Excuses From 1980 Disaster

February 22nd 2010 14:15
1980 USA Hockey Team,TCFB

Check out these recent quotes from various Soviet hockey players about the 1980 'Miracle on Ice' loss to the Americans. ( To read full article, check out story on NBC Sports )

"It was difficult for me to sit on the bench with the score 2-2," said the Hall of Fame goaltender who won three Olympic gold medals and was part of 10 world championship Soviet teams. "If I played the second and third period, the game might have turned a different way." [Coach,Viktor Tikhonov, pulled goalie, Vladislav Tretiak, after the first period to 'spark' the team ]

[Here's another Russian player, Valery Vasilyev]
"For me, it was a 'Mirage on Ice,'" Vasilyev was quoted as saying. "I still can't understand how we could have lost to the Americans. I still can't believe in that — as if it were a dream.

"I believed then and I still believe that our dismissive attitude to the U.S. team had led to our defeat," he said. "We simply hadn't taken them seriously."

Coulda, woulda, shoulda, fellas. You guys haven't let this go yet?

If this still affects you all to this degree, why don't you all head to a top notch Russian shrink and as Will Hunting said, "Let the Healing Begin!" It's been a long time boys, you got smacked down in Lake Placid, now you need to stand up tall and walk proud once again. For Christ sakes, you guys are like 50 years old now. Let it go and enjoy your lives.

As Vince Lombardi once said: "The strength of the group is the strength of the leaders." You should've put that advice to some good use back in 1980 against the Americans. Don't blame the coach. Don't say you didn't take the US of A seriously. Don't call it a 'Mirage on Ice'! Not only did Jim Craig stand on his head that day, between the US pipes, but you and your team leaders failed you as well. Now let's move on with life, boys. Enough of the excuses. Excuses are for losers. I know, 'two is not a winner and three nobody remembers' (thanks Nelly), but you also were a fine bunch of hockey players. Let the demons fly and be done with this nightmare once and for all.

Take care, boys.
