"State of the Empire"

Happy Monday... Is there a more exciting play in baseball than this???
What lighting speed this kid has.. He ignites the whole offense when he plays like he did last night. I think Ellsbury is finally arriving as the real deal in Beantown. That steal of home was incredible to see last night. This kid is at full speed after what seems to be two steps.
That being said, todays post isn't really about any of that. It's about the state of the Yankees. Now I am not one to cry "poor mouth" when it comes to what NY spends on players every year as opposed to what the Red Sox spend. They both have ridiculously expensive payrolls. I would say this even if I were a Yankee fan: Is there any doubt who has the better business model right now between these two teams? The mix of young talent on the major league roster and in the minors that the Red Sox boast over NY right now is significant. The young arms in this Red Sox organization right now has never been better. Have you seen this Yankee bullpen? How can you spend that amount of money in the offseason, young Steinbrenner, and just neglect cultivating your bullpen outside of Rivera? That bullpen is flat out awful. The Red Sox had two kids, one of them was top starting pitching prospect Michael Bowden, come in after Masterson who just shut the Yankees down. Who did New York counter with this whole weekend? Who will they counter with for the rest of the year? A-Rod doesn't pitch the last time I checked, and yes they will win a bunch of 12-10 type games when A-Rod comes back but we all know that type of a team doesn't make it to the postseason. Middle relief, the way baseball is played right now in the age of specialized pitching, is the difference between making the playoffs and winning pennants or going golfing at the end of September. There is no question in my mind that they Yankees have to put Big Daddy Joba back into the pen to set up Rivera or they are in for a long, long year.
On another note, there is no better player to have your kid watch play the game than Derek Jeter in terms of his overall ability and smarts and the way he plays the game and stays away from the sideshows and distractions that could so easily distract someone with his type of star power and marketability. This guy goes down as one of my all time favorite players to watch play the game. Classy player. The only thing I can think of that he's done wrong since I've been following his career was letting Jessica Biel go. But I'm sure he got through it okay.
