TCFB New England Patriots Draft Day Overview…Past & Present
April 22nd 2010 13:00
Don’t know about you guys but I’m fired up to glue my eyes to the TV tonight and get on with this 2010 NFL Draft. (7:30pm, ESPN & NFL Network)
Lets review the biggest bust in Patriots draft history and because I’m in such good mood, I’m going to give you my top pick in Patriots history as well… Glass his half full today, people! Then I’ll give you the player I hope Coach Darth Vader selects tonight at #22.
Biggest Bust In Patriots Draft History: Ken Sims, DE---Texas (1982)
Sims was taken #1 overall by New England and quite honestly he shit the bed---hard core. Nobody has taken a shit in a nice clean bed any worse in this teams history when you consider what is expected out of a #1 overall pick.
Kenny boy only played one full season during his eight seasons in Foxboro. His best year came in 1985 when the Pats ‘Squished the Fish’ but were ‘Bludgeoned by the Bears.’ He finished with 5.5 sacks that year. Guess how many he ended up with in his career. SIXTEEN! Safe to say Kenny peaked in ’85. He also had a little Allen Iverson in him when it came to practice. PRACTICE!!?? Not one of Sims’ favorite activities.
Hope all is well, Ken.
Best Pick In Patriots Draft History: John ‘Hog’ Hannah, OG---Alabama (1973)
“How can you pick Hog Hannah over Tommy Brady, Daddy TCFB?” In the words of Pedro Cerrano from Major League, "bring that shit to me, man!"..because I have an answer for you. One word for Darth Vader’s drafting of Brady….LUCK. Pure l-u-c-k… Brady could’ve just as easily been Tim Rattay and if he was, people would've been crying in their chowder all over New England as we watched Drew Bledsoe hang on by a dental floss size thread in the twilight of his career as a Patriot.
Hog Hannah was a 10x All Pro and voted the #1 offensive guard on the NFL’s 75th Anniversary Team . Quite frankly, the man was the best guard of all time, no questions asked. Let's proceed...
1st Round Pick I'd like to see Darth Vader make tonight: Sergio Kindle, OLB---Texas
Let's make up for the failed Texas Longhorn selection of Sims in 1982 with another Longhorn, outside linebacker, Sergio Kindle. Some of the mock drafts out there right now have Kindle going before the Pats pick tonight. However there are enough people that seem to think there's a good chance he'll still be there.
This team is in desperate need of a big, young, athletic outside 'backer with the versatility that Kindle possesses. At 6'4'', 255 pounds, with the ability to do many different things at the position, he projects to be an upgraded version of what Mike Vrabel used to bring to the table here in New England. I love this pick if he's there at 22.
Some of you may remember me pining for the versatile running back out of Ole Miss, Dexter McCluster, when I wrote about him a few months ago. I still think he is a fantastic pick for this football team, but not until one of those 2nd round picks come around.
The 2010 draft is arguably the most important draft of Darth Vader's tenure in New England. Where this team goes from here is largely dependent on what happens between tonight and Saturday.
Enjoy.
Chuck
