I think Slats has been been taking a color commentary course at CSB (if they have opened up their doors again). Everyone puts some decent insight into the topic.
Probably going to get bashed for this one but it certainly wouldn't be the first time.
In regard to the Rush Limbaugh thing, honestly, to me he is a caricature and when I hear anybody refer to him as a political "figure" it strikes me as ignorant. He could be espousing left wing rhetoric and it would appeal to me just as little.
The one statement that he was publicly castigated for in the sports milieu unfortunately had to come from him. I say unfortunately because it was at least presented in a manner that didn't have a political or rac"ist" slant and struck me with an unashamed honesty. I am sure ol' Rush did quite a few rewrites before he threw it to the national audience but I am glad it was said.
America is about overcoming adversity and barriers and attempting to achieve equity. Do I resent African Americans for wanting a fellow African American to succeed at a traditionally Caucasian position on the football field? Absolutely not. My lifelong rancor against Doug Williams has nothing to do with his skin color. Very nice man from what I read but he is definitely not invited over for BBQ. We all have our demons.
Black owners, black coaches… I honestly don't give a rats ass if the result is quality combined with equity. The Rooney rule I think has done nothing but improve the pool of coaching talent available to the NFL. I think it would be fantastic if the percentage breakdown was an equal slice of the pie to all colors and heritage, from the owner's box to the sidline to the field. Bravo. I think we can all agree that the "Old Boy" network needed to have it's restrictive chains rattled and broken.
However when the compass points 180° and I express my desire to see Craig Pickering break 10.0 or cheer John Stockton when he set the assist record in the NBA, is that racist or simply a desire to see equity in all endeavours? The only thing I can come up with is that in my heart, I would like people who hear things in mainstream media like, they are not as fast or can't jump as high to prove those statements false. It is a ha ha joke when mentioned on every media outlet imaginable but aren't you curious to see that stereotype broken as well? Do we ever hear blacks can't play quarterback because they are not smart enough as a rollicking yuk-fest on the radio? Don't think so folks.
Sorry for the ramble Chuck. Just something I had on my mind and thanks for the space.
thanks for the birthday wishes 'anonymous'.. Appreciate that... And Christian you make some great points.. No apologies necessary for the 'ramble'.. For now the site domain is still called 'sportramble' it fit in just fine! LOL
Oh yeah and Happy Birthday you old fart. At your age some men are NFL head coaches. LOL.
Of course at my age some men are Quarterbacking the Vikings. Yeesh. I creak.
lol... Josh McDaniels and I are shamefully very close in age. However I'm ashamed to say I think I've just turned 34 before him! LOL

I’m wishing you another year
Of laughter, joy and fun,
Surprises, love and happiness,
And when your birthday’s done,
I hope you feel deep in your heart,
As your birthdays come and go,
How very much you mean to me,
More than you can know.
Happy Birthday
