TCFB---'Hot Links'---7/22/09

July 22nd 2009 15:54

Before we get to the ‘Hot Links’---I have to rant on one little thing and get it out of my system…

Any of you who have played baseball past the Little League level, had to have noticed something during that Red Sox game last night---Mike Lowell is still hurt. There is no doubt in my mind. When that ball was ripped down the third base line and Lowell crossed over to his right when reacting to it, it was clear as day he isn’t moving well at all. No, there is no way that he could’ve gotten to the ball, that’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying that there’s just no fluid movement and he looks uncomfortable still. Even when he hit that RBI bloop single into right field, did you watch him getting out of the box and getting down the line? I’m sorry, but you just don’t get fluid drained out of your hip and sit out a few weeks and come back fresh as a daisy. The hip is and will be a problem for at least the remainder of this year. The Red Sox are really missing a power bat--even a gap/doubles hitter--if not a big HR threat and I have severe doubts that Lowell is going to be able to provide that for them down the stretch run here. It pains me to say that because I am such a fan of Lowell, but it’s true.

Forget Halladay, it was a fun idea to flirt with but the reality--like I said in my Victor Martinez post-- is that this team needs a bat in the middle of that order. If Martinez is available, I want him if I’m the Sox. He should be the number one target if Cleveland is making him available. Maybe he’s not available, I’m not an ‘insider’ on all things Yawkey Way, so I’m not sure on that. The fact is, he spells Lowell and J-Tek (who definitely needs a rest). J-Tek and Drew are both hitting in the .230’s. This team, right now, can not contend for a World Series as currently constituted, offensively. That offense needs a jump start badly and those of you who know me, know that I’m not the guy who stands on the Tobin Bridge every night after a loss. I understand the game and it is a huge marathon of a season. Trust me though, a bat is needed or you can sit back with Dice-K and sing ‘sayonara’ to ’09. C’mon, ‘Deal Or No Deal Lover’ Clay Buchholz, deliver tonight and pump up your stock around the league to even higher proportions. You are prime bait.

Now for some ‘Hot Links’….

Check out Bill Simmons’ final piece for ESPN Magazine--- a glowing tribute to his Father by one of my favorite writers… click here

Will John Henry please just sit back with his outstanding looking young wife and run this Red Sox team and please STOP talking or ‘tweeting’ about the goddamn Yankees? Check this piece from the girls at the Inside Track.. click here..

Michael Irvin seems to be thinking that New England is a perfect landing stop for his boy Mike Vick. No thanks.. but thanks anyway Michael… Check this piece on Yahoo Sports.. click here..
