The Entitled Jay Mariotti Hands In Blank HOF Ballot

January 7th 2010 14:00
Jay Mariotti

(From sportswriter, Jay Mariotti’s ESPN podcast on why he turned in a blank Hall of Fame ballot. Script is courtesy of Baseballink.com )

“Now, the baseball gods can strike me down, Really, but guess what? I didn’t vote for anybody in the baseball hall of fame this year. Ya know why? To me…the first ballot is sacred. I think Roberto Alomar is an eventual Hall of Famer, not the first time. Edgar Martinez, designated hitter, eventually, but not the first time. Same goes for maybe Fred McGriff. As far as Blyleven and Dawson…if they haven’t gotten in for years and years I cannot vote them in now. Ripken, Rickey Henderson and Gwynn. They are true first ballot Hall of Famers, but I didn’t vote for anybody, throw me out of the Baseball Writers. I don’t care.”

This is pure BS and another case of a writer making himself the main story as well as catapulting himself above the game.

Jay, you don’t make the rules, you obey them and get your vote in when you’re supposed to get your vote in, you tool. You want to make a point that the ‘first ballot is sacred’ and you don’t feel anyone on this years ballot is first ballot HOF material? Not your point to make, Jay. Stop acting like an entitled little goddamn baby and vote like you’re supposed to and when you’re done, turn in your right to vote if you wish. Don’t ‘not vote’ and then say, ‘kick me out bitches!’ Amazing. People like Mariotti must have the spotlight shining on them at all times. You can be sure this will happen again someday. Self important Jay will think that another set of players do not deserve first ballot treatment and he’ll hand in another blank ballet. Boot this insufferable blowhard on his ass now.

Oh and an aside on this all: Roberto Alomar not making it into the HOF on the first ballot is outright ludicrous to me and many other people. One of the best---if not the best--second baseman of all time. He loogied on an umpire, which was one of the most disgusting acts I’ve ever seen on a baseball field, but if that deterred people from voting for him, shame on them. One person has already admitted to not voting for Alomar because of the spitting incident. Go ahead, tell me ‘character goes into the equation when voting.’ I’m aware of that. I agree that Alomar had a horrific lapse of judgment when he spit on that umpire. However, it was a one time mistake and it shouldn’t be held against him when it comes to HOF votes.
