Tiger Woods Needs To Apologize To These Three Sets Of People Only

February 18th 2010 21:17
Tiger Woods

Throughout this whle Tiger Woods fiasco, I've had very little to say. I never really piled on like everyone else. Sure, a little joke here or there, but nothing major. I just want to touch really quickly, and most likely for the last time ever on TCFB on this Tiger Woods situation, prior to this ‘press conference’ sham coming up on Friday. To me, there are three sets of people that Tiger Woods might want to apologize to in the aftermath of this all...

#1) His family, which I’m sure he has by now.

#2) His corporate sponsors. Darren Rovell put it best today when he said that Woods should offer his services free of charge for a year to all of these high end sponsors like, Nike, Upper Deck, Electronic Arts, Tag Heuer, and Golf Digest, who have stood by him throughout this ordeal.

#3) Young fans that look up to him as a role model. I know Woods’ close buddy, Charles Barkley, says athletes shouldn’t be role models, but the fact of the matter is that they are in fact just that. Like it or not. An athlete can not escape this reality. You are a role model.

There is one group of people who don’t need an apology and I’m tired of hearing that they do. That would be us. The adults of the world. The 'Jenny from the block' types. The Joe and Mary Smith from the neighborhood types. People like us. We don’t need Tiger Woods telling us that he’s sorry for his transgressions. It’s none of our business how this guy lives his life. He has no responsibility to us like he has to his family, his sponsors, and his young fans who look up to him.

Yes, the parents of the world have been put into an uncomfortable position when their young kids come to them asking what happened with Tiger Woods. We don’t need an apology from Tiger for putting us in that position. It’s one of our responsibilities as adults that we accept when we choose to bring children into the world and become parents. Uncomfortable situations arise that we must explain if they come to us and ask us about them. This is one of those situations.

Do yourself a favor Tiger. Toss aside the paper with the speech that your PR people polished up for you and speak from the heart. Apologize to these three sets of people and move on with your life.
